A work of brilliant literature? Of course not
By Amazon Customer
This was a gripping story. A work of brilliant literature? Of course not.
The entire series is great to listen to while you're driving. Sure, it's a bit cliché, but the book really grabs you in. And I highly recommend the audiobook; David Pittu can act out any voice--from a naïve young woman to a vengeful old man.
To anyone upset by the book's "endorsement" of homosexuality and ergo its "gay liberal agenda," please chill out. Earlier in the 39 Clues series, a main character [spoiler alert] cheats on her boyfriend. If this supposed "endorsement" of infidelity didn't make you stop reading the series, then there's no reason that a much more minor (and less frequently mentioned) issue should, logically. The series doesn't go into all the moral implications of these types of actions (even more major ones like killing and death); it tends to present these things as largely morally gray, while still showing the characters' emotional conflict, and leaves you to decide which of the characters' actions are right and wrong.
If you morally disagree with the characters' actions, then that's just another thing for you to think about.

...stereotyping, but not where you might expect it
By C. J. H. Library
Unlike some other reviewers, I have no problem with Hamilton having a boyfriend. Parents should be aware of it if this is something they will feel the need to discuss with their children who are intent on reading the book. And I don't believe his having a boyfriend will change his personality or behavior, just as I don't believe it has done so to anyone else in "real life" who is athletic and physically powerful and has come out. There does seem to be some stereotyping going on here with regard to Hamilton's personality and character development, but it wasn't by the author.
However, the writing style of this particular author was, in so many places, over the top in stereotyping some of the other characters, such as Ian -- he threw tantrums at times, and that's a style that doesn't fit the character he has grown up to be in the previous books; he can be arrogant, sure, but I would find his anger more believable as quietly menacing instead of a screaming match.
The premise and the action were fine, but so little character development to any of the characters, and that's something I realize we have been able to see in pretty much every previous book in the series. I'll look forward to the next book, but I won't be eager to read any by this author, I'm sorry to say. He just doesn't write with a style and an ease that holds my interest.
