Think of yourself as a technician on the job. Your supervisor presents you with a project idea designed to fill a need or to solve a problem. You must determine if the idea is feasible and, if so, build a working prototype project and develop an accompanying Project Report.

The project should resemble the final, mass-produced product. You must design the circuit, breadboard it, design and fabricate a printed circuit board, and then enclose the project in a functional and attractive case. The Project Report is to include appropriate written and graphic documentation. It delineates various troubleshooting and test procedures, summarizes project developments, and contains the 10-drawing set used to construct the prototype project.

In project construction, you have a choice of three approaches. In the first approach, you choose to build the Sample Project—the Variable Power Supply. This project progresses from chapter to chapter, starting with the two-step design process and ending with a completely packaged and tested prototype project, along with necessary documentation.

The Exercise Project, the 3-Channel Color Organ, is at a slightly higher level of difficulty. Because less help is provided in building this project, you'll have to do a bit of digging and developing on your own. The Exercise Project also is carried from chapter to chapter.

Finally, 30 Elective Projects are presented in Part III. Only Concepts and Requirements Documents and circuit design sketches are provided. Here you will need to develop specific project design and fabrication details on your own.

Although the project construction and documentation motivate you to progress from one chapter to the next, Electronic Project Design and Fabrication is more than a project book. The fundamentals of prototype project design, fabrication, and documentation are a part of every chapter. Even if you elect not to construct a project (a most unlikely occurrence), you will gain a firmer understanding of electronic device fabrication after studying the book.

The fifth edition of Electronic Project Design and Fabrication represents an up-to-date revision of a well-received text. New material has been added, including the following: "Something to Think About" minisections have been added at the end of every section. Students will find these suggestions for further inquiry inspiring. Chapter summaries have been updated to better lead into the material to come. Searching for electronic component sources has become easier, via the Internet. In Chapter 3 we explain how best to do this. In Chapter 7, a section has been added on PC board trace-width spacing. Electronics Workbench material in Chapter 3 has been revised to include a discussion of MultiSim V6.2. Material on computer-aided design (CAD), in Chapter 11, has been revised. Five new elective projects have been added in Chapter 17. Two new appendices have been added: Appendix J lists electronic kit sources, and Appendix K lists electronic project design and fabrication web sites to visit. In addition, Appendix G has been revised to include additional published sources for technical writers. New terms have been added to the glossary.

This book is an excellent starting point in the electronic engineering. The book is written for students and technicians, "not for engineers"; however, the author keeps a high academic level and covers all the topics of electronic engineering: design process, prototyping, CAD technologies, and documentation. I suggest the author to write other book like this one, focused on graduated engineers, with an industrial approach.......

Had to get it for a class, it's good because it doesn't assume too much prior knowledge. The authors should make DVD there is alot of stuff on YouTube but so much of it is poor audio/video quality.

Professor George Bruce, has 30 years’ industrial experience in shipbuilding, including more recent roles in facilities development, research and innovation. He currently teaches and conducts research at the Newcastle University School of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle, UK.

Former lecturer in Naval Architecture at Plymouth University, UK, and former Manager of Policy and Standards Development with the Maritime Safety Authority of New Zealand.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better

I was hoping that this book of Ship Construction would have graphics defining how the ship is put together with photos and drawings in today's construction methods. Unfortunately it does not fill the bill. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better at illustrating the construction techniques from the mid 1950's. There have been updated versions subsequent to the book edited by David Arnott. There is also a better book put out by Reed's series on ship design which has line drawings to illustrate the construction techniques which has been updated over the years. I wish that Mr. Bruce's book did more illustrating of the bow structure, the stern framework, the double bottom tankers strength members, and the strength members and plating which are integrated to make the ship strong and seaworthy.

Must-Read for Executives Engaged in M&A's

As an executive coach, I have read just about every book on M&A to help my clients navigate the turbulent waters of mergers, acquisitions and subsequent integration. This book is the best by far. M&As are up sharply in this economy as a means of pursuing corporate growth; however, as this book deftly illustrates, 55 to 75 percent of all mergers fail to achieve their financial goals. The authors cite disturbing statistics associated with M&As: stock prices decline approximately 70 percent of the time when an M&A is announced; only 23 percent of acquisitions earn back their capital cost; productivity declines 50 percent during the first four to eight months after the M&A; and about 60 percent of mergers result in lowered profitability for as long as seven years after the merger. Clearly, poorly-executed M&A's can be career-limiting. The reason for M&A failures is not a lack of financial and legal due diligence. Most executives engage in exceptionally thorough legal and financial due diligence processes. The reason for failed M&As is culture clash, the inability to integrate the operational, cultural and people aspects of the merging organizations. Culture clash results in internal confusion and in-fighting, inefficiency, frustration, downtime, and too much internal focus when what is needed is an external focus on customers. In addition to loss of staff morale and motivation, poorly executed M&As can result in the loss of key executives (nearly half within three years), decreased customer service and satisfaction, and brand confusion.
This outstanding book outlines a simple and effective process for my executive clients to engage in cultural due diligence (CDD). This process can be undertaken simultaneously with the legal and financial due diligence processes, usually inside of 30 days. This cultural due diligence process can eliminate culture clash, significantly increasing the likelihood of success of the merger, my executive clients and their careers. I view CDD as an essential process which supports the M&A, not one which turns up reasons not to pursue it. In addition to the logical and simple CDD process presented in this book, authors Bob Carleton and Claude Lineberry have included many case studies of successful M&A's as well as helpful worksheets and flow charts to help my executive clients pilot their M&A and integration. They've even included a CD-ROM filled with checklists, worksheets, agendas for staff and executive meetings to ensure cultural alignment, and other integration tools which can be customized and/or reproduced. I plan to give this book to every one of my executive clients contemplating or engaging in a merger. It just may save their careers!

Little disappointed

Having an MBA degree and being involved with M&A on a regular basis, this book offered me not much more than its bottomline "put people together to make things work". I expected a more concrete elaboration on "how to" deal with post-merger cultural issues. The books is filled with cliches and stories you will remember from HR courses in college, it does not offer you many "real world" experiences. The CDrom is not really of an added value.

Finally, Cultural Integration Made Simple

For a number of years I was the CFO of an organization that acquired several companies. The acquisition strategy always made sense, the financial and legal due diligence process was conducted flawlessly, but we still never achieved our pre-merger financial estimates in the timeframe we thought we would get them. Why? Because of the people issues! I always thought that people, then, were the "wild card" in a merger or acquisition. You can't predict or forecast what they will do after the merger takes place. Messrs. Carleton and Lineberry provide a simple, easy to understand process where for the first time I understand how the people and cultural aspects of a company can be evaluated even before the merger is complete. AND, you can do something with that evaluation to help prepare for the inevitable people clash! As a CPA, thank you for opening my eyes to look simultaneously at the people issues as well as the financial issues in the cultural due diligence process.

Happy to see any book on this topic.

I'm glad there is a book on this topic. I've been working with QlikView for over a decade now and Tableau for some years. As an operations research analyst, I've been wondering when the field will move on from mainly descriptive analysis (making simple graphs) to more model driven predictive analytics. I've read somewhere that predictive analytics will be the next frontier for visual data discovery products and I can't wait. I just started the book but from the Table of Contents and it looks like the book does not gloss over technical topics and I'm glad to see a section on Validation which I have never really seen addressed anywhere. I would recommend a solid background in math as a prerequisite and recommended but not critically required, a background in R and QlikSense.

I enjoyed reading through the book, especially the part where the rules derived in a classification tree could be translated into simple if else rules in Qlikview/Qlik sense, along with a thorough walk through on rattle options. However, I have also worked with Qlikview/Qlik sense extensions in the past, and I know direct webservice interaction (Qlik sense or Qlikview) or VB script Rcom interaction (Qlikview) could be built for interactive R exploration, so the book can be enhanced to include the extensions topic. Still, a good book to give an overview of rattle and the way it can be used in Qlik - hence recommend it as a nice read.

Something new on the market!

I was waiting for this book since January 2015. Firtst i thought it will be one of the books about Qlik. However Rattle aspect is a strong root in here. I have enjoyed reading this book and i have discover a lot new things. I am glad it is not one of those books, where there is nothing new but release date. Definitelly there is no other book like that on the market and i can strongly recommend buying it. Nice one!

About the Author
The author, Cary Siegel, is a retired business executive. After earning his MBA from the University of Chicago, he began his career in brand management with Kraft and went on to lead several companies in marketing and sales. He has been the lead speaker at over fifty sales meetings and marketing seminars, and was honored with over twenty awards during his career. Following the principles from this book (along with hard work) allowed him to retire at the age of forty-five.

A book for everyone

This book was an easy read, and when I say "easy" it means it needs to fit in my schedule and offer sound information. The format allowed me to pick up and read intermittently and I appreciated the information presented in this way. The principles are right on in the values and money/lifestyle management I would like to pass on to my 22 year old (I wish the book was out about 5 or 6 years earlier, but it's actually never too late for this guide) and 11 year old (guess who had occasionally read this with me?).
When we were recently at a department store and checking out, the clerk asked me if I would like to apply for their store credit card and receive a certain percentage off my purchases for the day. I declined the offer, as I had completed the chapter about having only one credit card to be paid off monthly (no extra spending for me) and knowing the credit inquiry might reduce my credit score. None of the reasons for getting the new credit card was worth it and I was able to explain to my 11 year old why we were not taking advantage of this "opportunity." The book allows for good solid every day discussions and lessons. I highly recommend this book for everyone and a great gift as well.

Excellent Book on Money Management

I finished this book in one sitting as it is easy to read and is so engaging. It positively and easily suggests great principles in money management. As a school counselor for over 25 years in the nationally leading Maryland Montgomery County Public Schools, I recommend this book highly to anyone in their twenties and thirties who is just beginning their professional life. This book would make a great graduation gift for both high school and college seniors. Each of the 99 principles are valuable concepts to follow through life. I wish I had learned these concepts at the start of my career.

Great book for parents, high school students, and early college students

Read this book last night and it was a great easy read. I wish this book was available when I first went to college or just finished high school. It would have saved me thousands and provide a game plan to set me up for my 40's and 50's. I am giving this book to all of my nieces and nephews that are in high school. Practiced principal #33 today myself and saved $300 in less than 10 minutes. It works! Highly recommend to all of those parents out there with high school children.

Not very helpful, safety concerns!

The author advises using candle colorant or crayons to color your soap. Please don't! Crayons and most candle colorants/dyes are not skin safe. You should use skin safe colorants and if you plan to sell soap, you must use skin safe colorants as defined by the FDA.

This book is a very basic exploration of soap making - no recipes are given nor are you told how to calculate lye. The author states gloves and goggles are not necessary after the soap traces. Please don't abandon safety precautions at trace. The soap is still harsh and can cause lye burns even after trace. Also, the page about soda ash is perplexing. Soda ash typically develops as a powdery substance on the outside of the soap bar. This is something that is not desired in the soap community and there are many discussions online about soda ash, what causes it and how to eliminate it. I really can't recommend this book because of the safety issues.

Excellent book for beginners

Was recommended to me as a great place to start out, so I bought the book and worked through it in merely a couple weeks and the advice provided was excellent. Moved on to all-natural, organic soapmaking to combine with the natural botanical personal care line we already have. Though most I already knew and I had an advantage with the existing skills and experiences, if I had tried to wing it on my own without this book, I likely would still be toiling away, making dopey mistakes instead of making beautiful all-natural cold-process soaps in only a couple weeks after starting out!

Decent Introduction to Soap Making

I was somewhat pleased with this purchase - I have recently been getting into more DIY projects and such - particularly when it comes to personal care products as I find I have more sensitive skin and commercial products that I get in the drugstore tend to irritate it. I was expecting to receive an in-depth description of how soap is made - instead I felt like it only skimmed the surface.

The author did provide a number of different methods for making soap - however, many of them used somewhat harsher ingredients and I wish different options had been explored. I also had trouble finding some ingredients listed in the book (no fault of the author's) and wish that they had maybe provided a list of actual places where I could locate the ingredients (instead of just saying a general soap-making store).

Despite what I felt was a lack of in-depth information, the book was still organized nicely and included good visuals. I just wish there had been more descriptive instructions given.
