Review
"Both now retired from teaching, Eyres…and Bruce…update their textbook (first published in 1971) from the 2007 edition. It introduces ship design and shipbuilding practice to advanced undergraduate students of marine sciences and technology. It can also be used as a study guide for the Extra Master examinations, and as background for students of shipbuilding itself."--Reference & Research Book News, December 2013

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better
By Dale Boulton
I was hoping that this book of Ship Construction would have graphics defining how the ship is put together with photos and drawings in today's construction methods. Unfortunately it does not fill the bill. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better at illustrating the construction techniques from the mid 1950's. There have been updated versions subsequent to the book edited by David Arnott. There is also a better book put out by Reed's series on ship design which has line drawings to illustrate the construction techniques which has been updated over the years. I wish that Mr. Bruce's book did more illustrating of the bow structure, the stern framework, the double bottom tankers strength members, and the strength members and plating which are integrated to make the ship strong and seaworthy.

Not as detailed
By WhoDatDeb
It is not very detailed, it only covers the basics. It is probably good for those just getting started in the marine world.
