    Lots of Information that can be a challenge to find

    Though has a lot of detail and photos, I strongly suggest having the Haynes and Chilton service manuals for additional insight. Also, there is no index so finding the information for a task/procedure requires some hunting around using the table of contents as a starting point (not unlike many other car shop manuals from that period)... and once you find it, mark it with a bookmark and/or write down the reference/page numbers... you'll thank me later :-)

    Excellent reprint of original shop manual

    This is a reprint of the original shop manual, and as such it is very complete, and very competent. Of course it assumes some level of auto mechanics knowledge, like what a spark plug is, and what ignition timing means. My only complaint is that they did not print the wiring diagrams in color, which they really should be. One can find the color-coded disgrams elsewhere on the net, but for the price of this book it would is not too much to expect. But, overall, still an excellent manual for this vintage beetle.

    The VW repair book that has everything.

    This is a very comprehensive book (BIG and HEAVY); there is nothing missing here. It does not have the hand holding chatter that the John Muir book has (also recommended) but goes into great detail of every facet of repair (I mean, even welding body parts). This should be the second or third book you buy if you are maintaining or restoring an old beetle or Karmann Ghia.

    I bought this book to learn more about pragmatics and its applications in data. I found this book well written. It flows through the topic in a step by step manner with sufficient depth and great examples. The book made the topic of pragmatics understandable and not superficial.

    This is a book that anyone who works with data and information should read and understand to become Data Literate. It will remain one of my primary references.

    I am in no way a linguist or someone versed in language but this book exposed a whole new world to me that helps me better understand two key factors in human and data communications; meaning and context.

    This is a beautiful reference book but not a good starter book.

    A comprehensive and beautifully illustrated book, but not one a beginner should pick up and try to read from the beginning. It's possible to figure things out by piecing together the definitions and diagrams, but you have to work at it:

    page 1 Acarporus. Without carpels; lacking a gynoecium.

    page 22 Carpel. A megasporophyll. A simple pistil formed from one modified leaf, or the part of a compound pistil formed from one modified leaf. Carpel number of a compound pistil is determined by counting the number of stigmas, styles, locules and placentae. Carpel number is indicated by whichever of these parts is found in the greatest number.

    page 52 Gynoecium. All of the carpels of a pistil of a flower collectively.

    page 68 Megasporophyll. A modified leaf which bears one or more megasporangia.

    Must-have for serious botany

    This book is perhaps one of the most valuable additions to my proverbial "five-foot bookshelf" of field guides (trust me, it's much longer than five feet!). I was so impressed by it that I purchased a second copy for a friend who often goes with me in the field to search for rare species. The terms are clearly defined and best of all, illustrated in such a manner that makes the meanings quite plain. I would recommend it to anyone from intermediate amateur to professional. After all, we do tend to forget those terms we only use occasionally. Without the slightest hesitation, I give this book a full five stars. If I could make them xanthous, I would.

    This has been a very helpful resource in my Landscape Plant identification course. It has allowed me to study plants in more detail. It also helps me with spelling out technical terms, which is great. There are a number of illustrations that help explain different terms. It was a little confusing to use at first and wasn't exactly what I expected, but I love it now.
    The best way to describe this book is as a plant term dictionary.

Whether you are enrolled in a traditional lecture and laboratory class or a fabrication course devoted entirely to the subject, this book provides the hands-on experience in project building and documentation every prospective electronics technician requires.

    A project, however, is not all you will be developing as you progress through the text. You will also be building confidence in your ability to construct electronic devices. The know-how to take a project from an initial concept through to final construction with support documentation is sure to give you pride and self-assurance as you enter the electronics industry. Electronic Project Design and Fabrication will prepare you for that exciting moment.

    Think of yourself as a technician on the job. Your supervisor presents you with a project idea designed to fill a need or to solve a problem. You must determine if the idea is feasible and, if so, build a working prototype project and develop an accompanying Project Report.

    The project should resemble the final, mass-produced product. You must design the circuit, breadboard it, design and fabricate a printed circuit board, and then enclose the project in a functional and attractive case. The Project Report is to include appropriate written and graphic documentation. It delineates various troubleshooting and test procedures, summarizes project developments, and contains the 10-drawing set used to construct the prototype project.

    In project construction, you have a choice of three approaches. In the first approach, you choose to build the Sample Project—the Variable Power Supply. This project progresses from chapter to chapter, starting with the two-step design process and ending with a completely packaged and tested prototype project, along with necessary documentation.

    The Exercise Project, the 3-Channel Color Organ, is at a slightly higher level of difficulty. Because less help is provided in building this project, you'll have to do a bit of digging and developing on your own. The Exercise Project also is carried from chapter to chapter.

    Finally, 30 Elective Projects are presented in Part III. Only Concepts and Requirements Documents and circuit design sketches are provided. Here you will need to develop specific project design and fabrication details on your own.

    Although the project construction and documentation motivate you to progress from one chapter to the next, Electronic Project Design and Fabrication is more than a project book. The fundamentals of prototype project design, fabrication, and documentation are a part of every chapter. Even if you elect not to construct a project (a most unlikely occurrence), you will gain a firmer understanding of electronic device fabrication after studying the book.

    The fifth edition of Electronic Project Design and Fabrication represents an up-to-date revision of a well-received text. New material has been added, including the following: "Something to Think About" minisections have been added at the end of every section. Students will find these suggestions for further inquiry inspiring. Chapter summaries have been updated to better lead into the material to come. Searching for electronic component sources has become easier, via the Internet. In Chapter 3 we explain how best to do this. In Chapter 7, a section has been added on PC board trace-width spacing. Electronics Workbench material in Chapter 3 has been revised to include a discussion of MultiSim V6.2. Material on computer-aided design (CAD), in Chapter 11, has been revised. Five new elective projects have been added in Chapter 17. Two new appendices have been added: Appendix J lists electronic kit sources, and Appendix K lists electronic project design and fabrication web sites to visit. In addition, Appendix G has been revised to include additional published sources for technical writers. New terms have been added to the glossary.

    This book is an excellent starting point in the electronic engineering. The book is written for students and technicians, "not for engineers"; however, the author keeps a high academic level and covers all the topics of electronic engineering: design process, prototyping, CAD technologies, and documentation. I suggest the author to write other book like this one, focused on graduated engineers, with an industrial approach.......

    Professor George Bruce, has 30 years’ industrial experience in shipbuilding, including more recent roles in facilities development, research and innovation. He has acted as a consultant to shipbuilders and marine companies across the world and contributed to committees, steering groups and associations across the industry. He currently teaches and conducts research at the Newcastle University School of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle, UK.

    Former lecturer in Naval Architecture at Plymouth University, UK, and former Manager of Policy and Standards Development with the Maritime Safety Authority of New Zealand.

    The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better

    I was hoping that this book of Ship Construction would have graphics defining how the ship is put together with photos and drawings in today's construction methods. Unfortunately it does not fill the bill. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better at illustrating the construction techniques from the mid 1950's. There have been updated versions subsequent to the book edited by David Arnott. There is also a better book put out by Reed's series on ship design which has line drawings to illustrate the construction techniques which has been updated over the years. I wish that Mr. Bruce's book did more illustrating of the bow structure, the stern framework, the double bottom tankers strength members, and the strength members and plating which are integrated to make the ship strong and seaworthy.

    Must-Read for Executives Engaged in M&A's

    As an executive coach, I have read just about every book on M&A to help my clients navigate the turbulent waters of mergers, acquisitions and subsequent integration. This book is the best by far. M&As are up sharply in this economy as a means of pursuing corporate growth; however, as this book deftly illustrates, 55 to 75 percent of all mergers fail to achieve their financial goals. The authors cite disturbing statistics associated with M&As: stock prices decline approximately 70 percent of the time when an M&A is announced; only 23 percent of acquisitions earn back their capital cost; productivity declines 50 percent during the first four to eight months after the M&A; and about 60 percent of mergers result in lowered profitability for as long as seven years after the merger. Clearly, poorly-executed M&A's can be career-limiting. The reason for M&A failures is not a lack of financial and legal due diligence. Most executives engage in exceptionally thorough legal and financial due diligence processes. The reason for failed M&As is culture clash, the inability to integrate the operational, cultural and people aspects of the merging organizations. Culture clash results in internal confusion and in-fighting, inefficiency, frustration, downtime, and too much internal focus when what is needed is an external focus on customers. In addition to loss of staff morale and motivation, poorly executed M&As can result in the loss of key executives (nearly half within three years), decreased customer service and satisfaction, and brand confusion.
    This outstanding book outlines a simple and effective process for my executive clients to engage in cultural due diligence (CDD). This process can be undertaken simultaneously with the legal and financial due diligence processes, usually inside of 30 days. This cultural due diligence process can eliminate culture clash, significantly increasing the likelihood of success of the merger, my executive clients and their careers. I view CDD as an essential process which supports the M&A, not one which turns up reasons not to pursue it. In addition to the logical and simple CDD process presented in this book, authors Bob Carleton and Claude Lineberry have included many case studies of successful M&A's as well as helpful worksheets and flow charts to help my executive clients pilot their M&A and integration. They've even included a CD-ROM filled with checklists, worksheets, agendas for staff and executive meetings to ensure cultural alignment, and other integration tools which can be customized and/or reproduced. I plan to give this book to every one of my executive clients contemplating or engaging in a merger. It just may save their careers!

    Little disappointed

    Having an MBA degree and being involved with M&A on a regular basis, this book offered me not much more than its bottomline "put people together to make things work". I expected a more concrete elaboration on "how to" deal with post-merger cultural issues. The books is filled with cliches and stories you will remember from HR courses in college, it does not offer you many "real world" experiences. The CDrom is not really of an added value.

    Finally, Cultural Integration Made Simple

    For a number of years I was the CFO of an organization that acquired several companies. The acquisition strategy always made sense, the financial and legal due diligence process was conducted flawlessly, but we still never achieved our pre-merger financial estimates in the timeframe we thought we would get them. Why? Because of the people issues! I always thought that people, then, were the "wild card" in a merger or acquisition. You can't predict or forecast what they will do after the merger takes place. Messrs. Carleton and Lineberry provide a simple, easy to understand process where for the first time I understand how the people and cultural aspects of a company can be evaluated even before the merger is complete. AND, you can do something with that evaluation to help prepare for the inevitable people clash! As a CPA, thank you for opening my eyes to look simultaneously at the people issues as well as the financial issues in the cultural due diligence process.
