About the Author

David Herman teaches in the Department of English at Ohio State University. He has published several studies in the field, including The Cambridge Companion to Narrative, Narrative Theory and the Cognitive Sciences, Story Logic, and Narratologies.

Manfred Jahn is based at the University of Cologne in Germany and has published articles on focalization, represented speech and thought, and cognitive narratology in venues such as the Journal of Pragmatics, Poetics Today, Style, and Narratologies. He has also authored a widely used online guide to narratology and narrative theory, freely available at .

Marie-Laure Ryan is an independent scholar and a former recipient of NEH and Guggenheim Fellowships. She has published widely in the areas of narrative theory, electronic textuality, and media studies. Her most recent studies include Narrative across Media and Avatars of Story.

Great recopilation

A bit too theoretical

I'm new to narrative theory, and I came to this book looking for insights that will help me to talk about literature with college students, rather than to teach or write about theory itself. The book's wide range can certainly make for interesting browsing, and the various "navigational aids" are helpful, at least in the print version I'm using. Many articles, though, seem like lapidary summaries of their respective topics by contributors who are talking more to their peers and grad students than to poor shnooks like me who perhaps naïvely think of an encyclopedia as someplace to get an overview of the basics.

Despite this book's very generous scope (which is the main reason I give it four stars), in any work of this type there are nits one can pick. I was disappointed that most of the entry "Japanese narrative" focused on works from around 1,000 years ago, with the 20th-21st Centuries getting barely a paragraph, and no mention is made of Japan's unique position in the worlds of graphic narrative and keitai (mobile phone) fiction. An entry on "magical realism" isolates Julio Cortázar's pertinent writings to 1951-1956 for reasons not immediately transparent. And while there's a long essay on "Law and Narrative," the juncture of politics and narrative is hard to find, even in the index.

A more serious problem is the relative lack of sample quotations to illustrate some of the entries on specific elements and techniques of narrative. At first I thought this might be because the publisher required authors to obtain permissions for all quotes, as many publishers do, but Taylor & Francis's policies for authors seem to recognize that fair use and fair dealing exclusions from copyright make such a burden unnecessary. So I'm figuring that the paucity of examples is due either to perceived space limitations or to the fact that they just aren't theoretical enough. Either way, it reduces some articles' pedagogical value for the uninitiated, albeit while enhancing their value as aids for the sleepless.

Brillant but flawed E navigation

Content is great but the E version seems to have flawed navigation. The list of topics is not hyperlinked to the content. The index is linked but is so voluminous it can take five minutes to page through it if the required topic is not early in the alphabet. It would only be a couple of hours work to link of the topic list - will the editors please oblige??

About the Author

Edward T. Dowling (Bronx, NY) is a professor of economics at Fordham University and currently serving his second term as the chairman of the department. He was the chairman of the economics department from 1979 to 1982 and the dean of Fordham College from 1982 to 1986. His Ph.D. is from Cornell University, and his main areas of professional interest are mathematical economics and economic development. In addition to articles, he is the author of Schaum's Outline of Introduction to Mathematical Economics, Second Edition. He is also a Jesuit priest and a member of the Jesuit Community at Fordham.

Follow the math!

This is a very accessible and informative book. I had a couple of courses in calculus back in the early '60's, but I remembered next to nothing. Furthermore, I had absolutely no recollection of partial derivatives or total differentials. For all I know, we never covered them.

Nevertheless, with the help of Dowling's text, a colleague and I were able to use partial derivatives with a large data set to demonstrate that school size and the measured achievement of schools with largely low-income students are inversely related. Furthermore, using total differentials we were able to demonstrate that the measured achievement costs of increasing school size are diminished as districts get smaller, and that the benefits of small schools for less-advantaged students are diminished as districts get larger.

This is the one time in my life that I was able simply "follow the math" to a new and interesting finding, the one that followed from the total differential. Without a text as accessible, usefully organized, and broadly informative as Dowling's, I never would have been able to pull it off. A small achievement, perhaps, but very satisfying.

A solid introduction

...to the topic, although a bit more depth would be the only thing lacking it. I recommend it to anyone who is studying business and is struggling with the math side of it, although as you progress in your studies, you will notice that the book doesnt go into enough depth, especially in the area of differential geometry.

I am scheduled to start a Masters in Applied Economics. I was not getting straight answers, I decided to contact one of the finest schools in the world, John Hopkins. On their website they recommend the outline in this book. That is what they expect students to know before they start a Masters in Econ.

About the Author
Dalton Conley is University Professor at New York University. He holds faculty appointments in NYU's Sociology Department, School of Medicine, and the Wagner School of Public Service. In 2005, Conley became the first sociologist to win the prestigious National Science Foundation's Alan T. Waterman Award, which honors an outstanding young U.S. scientist or engineer. He writes for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, Slate, and Forbes. He is the author of Honky (2001) and The Pecking Order: A Bold New Look at How Family and Society Determine Who We Become (2004). His other books include Being Black, Living in the Red: Race, Wealth, and Social Policy in America (1999), The Starting Gate: Birth Weight and Life Chances (2003), and Elsewhere, U.S.A. (2009). The writing is as bright as the cover.

I had to buy this for a Sociology 100 class. Although it's a textbook, there are a lot of references to pop culture making the boring drudgery of learning a lot less painful.

Conley also has a sense of humor, something numerous other textbook authors lack. You can often find something to laugh about in each chapter - my personal favorite being a picture of The Onion's mockery of Oprah (chapter 3).

Of all the sociology textbooks to read, this one may be the best.

Most creative and enjoyable textbook in college.

No doubt one of the most effective, engaging books to revolutionize the way students perceive "textbooks." Even if you open the book with little regard for sociology, the author extracts your curiosity through relatable anecdotes, tangible world issues, and a fond sense of humor so that each flip of the page feels lighter the more you read. You can almost feel his presence patiently walking you through each point making sure that you're engaged and understanding his points. Thumbs up for the astounding, creative graphics that could not have complemented his writing better.

I was looking for the Third Edition, not the ...

I was looking for the Third Edition, not the Core Third Edition. When I put in the correct ISBN the Third Edition came up, when I clicked to buy the e-text the Core Third Edition came up and said "replica of the book." I assumed it was the same. It's not. Make sure you double check before purchasing. I ended up spending another $30 to rent the correct version to finish my course. My mistake, but not sure why when you click on the e-text it takes you to a different version (Core Third Edition), when there is an e-text version of the Third Edition too.

Michael Nowicki, EdD, FACHE, FHFMA, is a professor of health administration and director of the School of Health Administration at Texas State University, where he has won numerous awards for his teaching, research, and service. The real thing

I have been counselling patients for more than 15 years based on what I've learned at school and at work. And I was looking for a book that would really touch the humanistic side of the patient counselling process. Thanks God, I found it.
I highly recommend keeping a copy of it in your library to refer to it whenever you feel that you are sinking in a dry world of guidelines and recommendations. It is the real thing.

This book is a waste of money and I regret buying it. If you've already taken a class that requires a large textbook, such as psych nursing, then you've already learned the communication/culture material presented in this text.

Richard Schacht is Professor of Philosophy and Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Emeritus) at the University of Illinois. His books include Nietzsche (1983); Making Sense of Nietzsche (1995); Hegel and After (1975); Alienation (1970); The Future of Alienation (1994); and Finding an Ending: Reflections on Wagner's Ring (2004, with Philip Kitcher). He is editor of Nietzsche: Selections (1993); Nietzsche, Genealogy, Morality (1994); and Nietzsche's Postmoralism (2001).
