Copleston, an Oxford Jesuit and specialist in the history of philosophy, first created his history as an introduction for Catholic ecclesiastical seminaries. However, since its first publication (the last volume appearing in the mid-1970s) the series has become the classic account for all philosophy scholars and students. The 11-volume series gives an accessible account of each philosopher's work, but also explains their relationship to the work of other philosophers.

About the Author
Frederick Copleston was born in Somerset in 1907. After studying at Oxford, he held a number of academic posts, including Professor of the History of Philosophy and Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at London University. He died in 1994.

Thorough and readable

"A History of Philosophy" by Frederick Copleston is a multivolume work that has become a classic in the field. I've owned my set for well over four decades by this point, and I find myself using it far more than the other histories of philosophy I own. While detailed and never superficial, Copleston writes in a clear and easy-to-understand fashion, one that is quite accessible to someone with little to no background in philosophy. The first volume of this massive undertaking covers the philosophy of ancient Greece and Rome. It begins with a survey of the pre-socratic period, one that does a great job of spelling out the issues with which the early Greek philosophers wrestled. After this we find a thorough analysis of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. The Epicureans, Stoics, and neo-Platonists (especially Plotinus) are also covered in detail.
