Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, by David Bayles, Ted Orland

"This is a book about making art. Ordinary art. Ordinary art means something like: all art not made by Mozart. After all, art is rarely made by Mozart-like people; essentially—statistically speaking—there aren't any people like that. Geniuses get made once-a-century or so, yet good art gets made all the time, so to equate the making of art with the workings of genius removes this intimately human activity to a strangely unreachable and unknowable place. For all practical purposes making art can be examined in great detail without ever getting entangled in the very remote problems of genius."
—-from the Introduction

Art & Fear explores the way art gets made, the reasons it often doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way. The book's co-authors, David Bayles and Ted Orland, are themselves both working artists, grappling daily with the problems of making art in the real world. Their insights and observations, drawn from personal experience, provide an incisive view into the world of art as it is expeienced by artmakers themselves.

This is not your typical self-help book. This is a book written by artists, for artists -— it's about what it feels like when artists sit down at their easel or keyboard, in their studio or performance space, trying to do the work they need to do. First published in 1994, Art & Fear quickly became an underground classic. Word-of-mouth response alone—now enhanced by internet posting—has placed it among the best-selling books on artmaking and creativity nationally.

Art & Fear has attracted a remarkably diverse audience, ranging from beginning to accomplished artists in every medium, and including an exceptional concentration among students and teachers. The original Capra Press edition of Art & Fear sold 80,000 copies.

An excerpt:

Today, more than it was however many years ago, art is hard because you have to keep after it so consistently. On so many different fronts. For so little external reward. Artists become veteran artists only by making peace not just with themselves, but with a huge range of issues. You have to find your work...

A must read for all artists!
By Stephen R. Whitney
As a serious painter, I own many books on art in general and the craft of painting in particular. They have been variously useful and sometimes even inspirational, but Art & Fear is worth more to me, than all the rest of my books put together. This book doesn't tell you how to paint or write or compose music or dance. Nor does it trot out the works of other painters, writers, composers, or dancers to serve as inspiration. Instead, it tells me and you and all other aspiring artists how to keep on working at what we love most. What a gem!

This book is a classic - don't listen to the whiners.

Before posting a review, I always

(1) read the negative reviews (1-2 stars)
(2) read the book beginning to end - and then
(2) re-read the negative reviews

Even then.... I rarely post a review. This time, I felt compelled. Those who post negative reviews regarding this book are in a class by themselves (thankfully) which I do not encounter often in real life. Decades ago, I actually made a living as an artist - granted, I was living on a shoestring, but through exposure to the work I sold to individuals, my customers would appear. It was all word of mouth. Flash forward: you got to make a living as a single parent (with no other financial or emotional support) and then, to get your child through college. Creative activities are on the back shelf meanwhile. Successful child-rearing: Mission accomplished.

Throughout life, I have struggled in many artistic disciplines to find "my passion." It has been late in life - but I *did* find it! I consider myself very fortunate because of that. This book was listed on the recommended reading list of one of my professors at a community college. Not too far into the book, my jaw dropped. This is not some "feel good about yourself" "keep on going" hippie tome. (I was a hippie once, so I feel some authority to speak from that perspective).

This book really speaks to the deeper blocks and fears that pervade the thinking processes of not only artists, but anyone responding to their passion as a pathway to success. As soon as I finished the book, I started reading it again. And not because I depended on some sort of new-agey "you can do it," but because it really helps in a way that (unfortunately) cannot be articulated. BUT - you really need to know what you're aiming to actually *do* with your time. If your passion is real, this will speak to you. If it is not, ho-hum. (At least that's the only way I can respond to the negative reviews here.)

Really glad I got this book. It helps me in so many ways to recognize my personal creative barriers and (this is going to sound really hokey and new-agey) allowed me to feel like what I experience in creating art is an experience that far more people know about than I had imagined. I'm glad a couple of guys were able to put it to paper.

Guide To Surviving Art
By Brewdaddy
When I first came across this book, it was assigned reading for a painting class. I didn't read it through, probably because at the time I was deep into the euphoria of being an art student and didn't really believe I would ever reach the fear part.
But since then, this book has become an invaluable reminder of the reasons I started making art, and a guide to the many obstacles faced when one decides that art will be an integral part of their life.
I strongly recommend it to aspiring artists, not because I think if will help them immediately, but because when they need it, they have it on their bookshelf already.
