Good Attempt, Inadequate for the National Test

Summary: The book really tries to be thorough, and the chapters are (mostly) laid out in a logical order. However, little differences in language throughout the book, constant small things not matching up between book and workbook, and lack of details as demanded by the National EMT test left me very dissatisfied by the end of my EMT class and National test.
Pros:
- Chapters organized in a (mostly) sensible way
- End of chapter summaries are helpful and (mostly) summarize in an understandable way
- Small dialogue/info/descriptive picture boxes in each chapter make chapters visually appealing
Cons:
- Dialogue/info boxes are visually appealing but do not always break up info (e.g. signs and symptoms) in the most understandable way
- Small differences of language throughout the book itself and between book and workbook give the impression that several people wrote different parts of the book and didn't check with each other
- Chapters are wordy but with simple language that doesn't communicate much substance or detail
- Workbook jumps between being insultingly simple to difficult beyond what was taught in the chapter
- Workbook does NOT faithfully represent the style of the National test
- National test demands WAY more detail than anything put forth in this book
My biggest problem with this book is that it was grossly inadequate in detail compared to what the National test demands. It's like learning in black and white when you're going to be tested in 200+ colors. There are somewhat helpful "On the Inside" boxes in each chapter, but even those aren't extensive enough. I recommend SUCCESS! for the EMT-Basic (2nd Edition) by Joseph J. Mistovich, which I credit for how I passed Nationals. It's a much more detailed book of questions and each answer goes in to great detail, BUT even that doesn't compare to the detail of the National test.
In short, if you're planning on taking the National test, read the "Signs & Symptoms" boxes backwards and forwards (though you might want to re-write them), memorize the "On the Inside" boxes, and then find another book that gives way more detail. The language of everything else manages to be wordy but lack substance, and the practice tests give you no idea of what the National test will be like. I realize this is difficult material, and you could do a lot worse in a book, but I sincerely hope that this isn't the best out there.

Great book

I bought this book for my EMT-B class. When I first received it and saw that it's the size of a phone book, I was pretty intimidated, but it's actually not that scary. They start you out with the basic information you need to know so by the time you get to the more complicated stuff, you understand what they're talking about.
If you are buying this for an EMT class, make SURE you read EVERYTHING assigned and actually know what you read, or else you will fail miserably. Consider getting the workbook,too. It's good practice for the NREMT.

You think they are all the same....

But they aren't. This was my required reading. I doubled up and purchased two others just in case. I found that I liked this one the best and just wasted my money on the other two. This book is very well organized and since all of the content to review for the NREMT is the same, that's what it is all about.
Highly recommended.
