Great bargain

on an otherwise hard to find text. I got tired of getting the old Loeb translations on interlibrary loan and having to give them back before I got very far. There is no information in this book about the text, but presumably it is the Dewing translation. The volume is nicely done, and the text looks good, so if you just want the story without the Greek and without any editorial assistance, at a great price, this is for you.

I have not actually read it yet, but Amazon sent me the review form, so I am responding. With something like this, the shopper really wants to know what it is in addition to the quality of the content, and what it is is a neat reproduction of the public domain translation from the 1920's of two volumes of Procopius' great history. Procopius is a delightful and informative writer, and the subject matter -- Belisarius' campaigns to bring Italy back under Imperial control -- is weighty, so I look forward to reading it.

Best Wodehouse Book I've read yet!

Like many, I discovered P.G. Wodehouse later in life, and so glad I did. One of the most brilliant humorists of any generation. It's not so much the plot (they're all pretty similar - Bertie in the Jeeves' series or Psmith or the Blanding's Castle cast or his other characters always get into some predicament involving eccentric relatives, on-again, off-again marriage plans, or some other harmless chicanery), but those of us who are devotees never tire of the brilliant repartee, characters, and humorous portrayal of the British landed gentry of the early 20th century. All of the books are enjoyable, some more than others, but I have to say without a doubt that "The Code of the Woosters" is definitely the most laugh-out-loud brilliant humor/writing/reading experience I've had to-date from Wodehouse. Absolutely pitch-perfect. Jeeves is at his finest, Bertie is either oblivious or in deep waters - often both at the same time. The range of characters is spot on - just the right touch throughout. I strongly recommend this book, and guarantee Wodehouse devotees you won't be disappointed!

Sometimes you just need a breath of fresh air, and you can always count on Wodehouse for a whimsical jaunt in the English countryside in colorful company. I haven't read much of his work, but this was just what I wanted for summer reading. The world he describes is pretty distant from anything familiar to those of us in the present, but there really isn't anyone who can compare with his way with words. He's still damn funny almost 100 years later. How many authors writing today will be able to make that claim? Not many.

Guaranteed chuckles and lol for readers who love intelligent goofiness and wordplay. I first gobbled Wodehouse in my twenties. His language was delightfully archaic forty years ago, no less so today. If you love Fawlty Towers, give this one a try.

This book has an awesome collection of information

This book has an awesome collection of information, spans the breadth of jet engine technology and has a fantastic collection of pictures. I like the strategy of starting off with some history and discussing the main aspects of design and finally covering each jet engine component in more detail. Over all, this book does an excellent job of covering the necessary details without becoming too textbookish.

What really makes it hard to read is the poor editing, repeated redundant information and unnecessary pictures that do not add value. To give an example of a random picture to fill out space, take for example the chapter on performance, Pg 78, there is a useless picture of 5 identical planes flying in formation. Every other picture (not referenced which is very irksome) is a performance map. Most figures are not numbered or referenced, so if you were reading your first jet engine book, you would be frustrated because you would find it difficult to easily grasp things.If you find CFD images or contour plots, they do not mention what is being plotted, for example in page 172, the picture is titled 'flow field analysis of a cavity in an internal system", there is no indication of what physical quantity is being displayed, how the colors map to magnitudes, making this picture meaningless!

An example of a conceptual mistake (IMO) is on page 14, the author says " When the nozzle is choked Vjet is fixed at Mach 1" where Vjet is the exit gas flow speed in the equation (F = W(Vjet - Vflight) + A(rho_exit - rho_inlet) . There two things wrong here:
- Vjet is velocity and not the dimensionless Mach number
- When a jet engine nozzle gets choked, it is the the Mach number at the throat that is Mach 1 and in usual operating conditions, the nozzle exit Mach number is supersonic (about 2)
This blunder early on and several others makes it really difficult to trust what the author has to say later.

My advice to the publishers and editors:Most people who will buy this book and pay $70 for it will mostly be aviation enthusiasts or Aerospace engineers (like myself) that hope to add an excellent book to their collection. We already know a good portion of the information and it is difficultl to get through the book in its present form. Therefore, in future revisions, please do the following:

- Revisit the information to make sure you have all the facts right, especially concepts
- Remove unnecessary pictures, instead elaborate on the existing information, make it more readable and add references to pictures.

About the Author
David T. Canon is professor and department chair of political science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His teaching and research interests focus on American political institutions, especially Congress, and racial representation. He is the author of Actors, Athletes, and Astronauts: Political Amateurs in the United States Congress; Race, Redistricting, and Representation: The Unintended Consequences of Black Majority Districts (winner of the Richard F. Fenno Prize); The Dysfunctional Congress? (with Kenneth Mayer); and various articles and book chapters. He served a term as the Congress editor of Legislative Studies Quarterly. He is an AP consultant and has taught in the University of Wisconsin AP Summer Institute for U.S. Government and Politics since 1997. Professor Canon is the recipient of a University of Wisconsin Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award.

John J. Coleman is dean of the College of Liberal Arts and professor of political science at the University of Minnesota. His teaching and research interests are in the evolution of the American state and the relationship between changes in the political economy of the United States and its party structure.

Kenneth R. Mayer is professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His teaching and research interests focus on American political institutions, especially Congress, the Presidency, and defense policy.

I really enjoyed using the Manhattan Prep set

I really enjoyed using the Manhattan Prep set. I purchased this together with 5LB exercise to prepare for verbal. The book was written in a very positive and encouraging tone, and I felt like I was learning with a real instructor. I scored 167/170 after 1 month of intensive study. I did all the verbal exercise in Mprep, including 6 online tests, and I think it really helped.

This is a decent book with plenty of useful exercises. But I have to admit I don't really like Manhattan Prep's writing style. There's something a bit "sour" about it. Princeton Review may be no better (or even worse) in terms of quality, but they do have a friendlier style of presentation. It has to be said also that Manhattan Prep does not grade your essays on the online exam. They give them to you under timed conditions, but you don't get any feedback. They need to start offering that service, and maybe they can outdo Princeton Review, who are incompetent in essay grading. They offer more free online exams with book purchases than Princeton Review does, which is good. Their materials are also rather more difficult, which could be good practice for the real thing depending on how you look at it.

Good supplement to ETS verbal questions (but master ETS ones first)

I tutor the GRE, and I generally recommend the Manhattan Prep set of eight GRE books, of which this is one. As a stand-alone purchase, this book is a good resource for additional TC and SE practice, but overall, its question realism is lacking.

I'll address the realism first. Now that ETS has published a verbal practice book, the need for Manhattan Prep practice material has diminished. Manhattan questions do not dependably capture the essence, nuances, and complexity of authentic GRE questions. Make sure you can do all of the ETS TC and SE questions in your sleep as well as being able to EXPLAIN them to a friend before you worry about supplementing.

But I know some of you are hardcore. This book will be a good supplement once you're truly done with the ETS questions (so will the Manhattan 5-lb. book).

Technique: Manhattan Prep's technique is good. Just keep in mind that the more you practice, the better you'll get, and the more you'll see how you have to adapt your technique at different times. Of course, real ETS verbal questions are the best teachers for this. In other words, Manhattan's TC and SC technique will work okay out of the box, but you'll want to refine it as you go.
