    Great Photos, Fun Facts

    Excellent close-up photography of some amazingly colorful and attractive spiders. "Spider Facts for Kids" by Cindy Bowdoin will fascinate young children, but do not underestimate your own fascination with the photos and text in this book. The book is rated for ages 9 - 12, but perhaps a more accurate title would be, "Spider Facts for Kids from 9 to 90", because the urge to read on will not dissipate at the age of 12.

    If you are at all like me, you will be somewhat surprised at the bold and brilliant colors and patterns found on so many of the spiders featured in this little book. You will also be surprised at the great variability to be found in the many, many spider species worldwide. You may even be surprised to be so surprised, but it quickly becomes obvious that there is a lot more to spiders than what you may think you know.

    This book has a lot to offer all ages, and you may find yourself looking at spiders from a whole new perspective after you peruse "Spider Facts for Kids". Believe it or not, you may even have fun as you learn to appreciate a spider's contribution to planet Earth.

    Great photos

    The photos are labeled with the name of the spider, but the font is so small you can hardly read the text. Based on what I know about spiders, the text seems to be correct and well written without nonsensical statements.

    But no information sources are listed. How can anyone have faith in a book if they do not know where the author got the information? No photo sources or photo credits are cited either.

    What you will find here is an excellent and succint primer about malaria: the biology (both of the Anopheles mosquito that carries it and of the Plasmodium parasite that causes it); the history of the science of "malariology", from the first studies which identified the parasite and the carrier to the more recent, still fruitless search for a vaccine; the history of how the medical and political world have shifted back and forth from attempts to eradicate to more limited attempts to mitigate.

    Overall, I suspect that if you want to read only ONE book on malaria you may want to go for Harrison's "Mosquitoes, malaria and men" (which is, however, much older (1978)) or Honigsbaum's "The fever trail" (2002), but if you are in a hurry, this little book will be just fine. All these books, anyway, are written for a general audience, are well and clearly written and can be enjoyed and understood without any medical training.

    Fascinating and informative

    This concise book illuminates the history of malaria and the necessity of using this earth to find cures for the diseases that stifle mankind. How quinine came to be used by the indigenous in S. America, and how malaria initially was attributed to every type of filth and spirit before they discovered the mosquito to be the culprits, are two of the many episodes in this book. An easy read for a complex subject.

    In this book Elizabeth Closs Traugott and Graeme Trousdale develop an approach to language change based on construction grammar. Construction grammar is a theory of signs construed at the level of the phrase, clause, and complex sentence. Until now it has been mainly synchronic. The authors use it to reconceptualize grammaticalization (the process by which verbs like 'to have' lose semantic content and gain grammatical functions, or word order is reorganised as syntax-prominent rather than discourse-prominent), and lexicalization (in which idioms become fixed and complex words simplified). Basing their argument on the notions that language is made up of language-specific form-meaning pairings and that there is a gradient between lexical and grammatical constructions, Professor Traugott and Dr Trousdale suggest that language change proceeds by micro-steps that involve closely related changes in syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse functions. They illustrate their exposition with numerous English examples drawn from Anglo-Saxon times to the present, many of which they discuss in depth.

    The book is organized in six chapters. The first outlines the approach and the questions to be addressed, while the second reviews usage-based models of language change, and the third considers the relation between grammatical constructionalization and grammaticalization. Chapters 4 and 5 focus respectively on lexical constructionalization and the role of context, before the final chapter draws the authors' arguments together and outlines prospects for further research. Constructionalization and Constructional Changes propounds and demonstrates a new and productive approach to historical linguistics.

    Elizabeth Traugott is Professor Emerita of Linguistics and English at Stanford University. Her many publications include Grammaticalization (1993 with Paul Hopper, revised ed. 2003), Regularity in Semantic Change (2002 with Richard Dasher), and Lexicalization and Language Change (2005 with Laurel Brinton).

    Graeme Trousdale is senior lecturer in English Language at the University of Edinburgh. His publications include An Introduction to English Sociolinguistics (2010) and The Oxford Handbook of Construction Grammar (2013, co-edited with Thomas Hoffmann).

    Oseland, who has lived in Singapore for 20 years, hopes to help people who haven't had the benefit of a trip to West Sumatra or Kuala Lumpur to discover those places' scents and tastes. Oseland devotes close to half the book to explaining ingredients, techniques and eating traditions as well as relating anecdotes from 20 years of roaming the islands and picking up the natives' cooking wisdom. Many ingredients will require special trips to ethnic markets, though Oseland allows for some substitution or omission of difficult-to-find items like fresh galangal or daun salam leaves. The first chapter covers sambals, every meal's essential spicy accompaniment, as well as other small dishes like the fiery Sweet-Sour Cucumber and Carrot Pickle with Turmeric; he follows with slightly more familiar street foods and snacks such as satays and gado-gado, then rice and noodles in all their guises, from simple, heavenly steamed rice to the zingy Malaysian Penang-Style Stir-Fried Kuey Teow Noodles. Oseland's instructions are detailed, and he makes a convincing case that with a little time and care, the best of these complex, interrelated cuisines can be enjoyed thousands of miles from their origin.     Excellent Book

    I've owned this book since 2007 or so and cooked most of the recipes in it. Do not be put off by the reviews that complain there aren't enough photos -- go online if you want a picture or just figure it out yourself.

    While these recipes are generally easy to follow it will take some time to get the balance right in many of them. This is home cooking at its best, which means you have to get a feel for it.

    Not all recipes are great -- chicken rendang is tough to keep moist. But then there's the nyonya pork and the beef rendang. Absolutely incredible and surprisingly easy. The chapter on vegetables is also a revelation...

    Passion for the palate

    I'm a chef and have been fortunate to travel somewhat extensively to the three countries whose cuisines are covered in this book, particularly Indonesia. I love this book. I'm actually relocating to Malaysia soon, and this book will go with me. It's great as a cookbook, but its true delight is found in the prose that accompanies the recipes, recounting the author's experiences in SE Asia, discussing hints for shopping at an Asian market, selecting the best spices, etc. I've had many of the dishes in the book, from satays in Bali to Padang-style food in Jakarta to the wonderful gudeg and ayam bubur in Yogyakarta to a fantastic fusion of Chinese, Malay, and Indian street food in Kuala Lumpur, to the comfort-food appeal of Nyonya cooking in small, family-run restaurants in Melaka (Malacca) to the fantastic crossroads of cuisine found in Singapore (indeed, about the only things to really do in Singapore are shop and eat).

    It's been said that food is the most apparent uniter of any culture, and that once everything else has been watered down or weaned away completely (think of Greek or Italian immigrants who have come to America), the last cultural identifier that remains is the food. It's so true, and this book absolutely takes you on a cultural and culinary journey. The author's passion for food and for the people of these fascinating countries practically leaps off the pages. The wonder of Indo-Malay cuisine is indeed the best-kept secret in Asia. Any sizeable city in America is likely to be overrun with Chinese and Thai restaurants. Vietnamese food is plentiful, and you can usually find Korean or Japanese food without much difficulty. But try to find an Indonesian restaurant, or a Malaysian restaurant serving up Nyonya chicken. If you do find one at all, it's likely to disappoint if you've ever spent any time in these countries. This book is the cure for what ails you.

    Any cookbook will offer a list of ingredients, preparation instructions (in varying degrees of clarity and depth), and occasional notes on the dish itself. This book utterly transcends the basic offering. Virtually every recipe is replete with anecdotes, personal observations, and a truly in-depth guide to making the dish spectactular. I do wish there were more color photos, the few that are included aren't really sufficient, but the quality of the recipes and the fantastic depth of the writing more than makes up for it.

    great intro to Indonesian cooking

    I've cooked many recipes from this cookbook, and it's been great. The food is delicious, and the instructions are clear. The recipes have been adjusted to take into account the availability of ingredients for American kitchens, but except for that, the recipes seem true to the authentic flavors.

    Sometimes the cooking instructions have been oversimplified and dumbed-down too much (as in frying potatoes one piece at a time, for example), and that's my only criticism of the book. But for a beginning cook, or a cook intimidated by or unfamiliar with Asian cuisines, the detailed play-by-play instructions may be a plus.

    I bought my book from Amazon after browsing the Cradle of Flavor online message board (Egullet forums). A group of people have cooked every recipe in the book and posted numerous photos and comments.

    Overall I recommend this book as an excellent introduction to Indonesian cooking.

    Twenty Irish immigrants, suspected of belonging to a secret terrorist organization called the Molly Maguires, were executed in Pennsylvania in the 1870s for the murder of sixteen men. Ever since, there has been enormous disagreement over who the Molly Maguires were, what they did, and why they did it, as virtually everything we now know about the Molly Maguires is based on the hostile descriptions of their contemporaries.

    Arguing that such sources are inadequate to serve as the basis for a factual narrative, author Kevin Kenny examines the ideology behind contemporary evidence to explain how and why a particular meaning came to be associated with the Molly Maguires in Ireland and Pennsylvania. At the same time, this work examines new archival evidence from Ireland that establishes that the American Molly Maguires were a rare transatlantic strand of the violent protest endemic in the Irish countryside.

    Combining social and cultural history, Making Sense of the Molly Maguires offers a new explanation of who the Molly Maguires were, as well as why people wrote and believed such curious things about them. In the process, it vividly retells one of the classic stories of American labor and immigration.

    Excellent, very well-researched book

    A very well-researched and detailed account of the Molly Maguires in Pennsylvania. Cuts through the myths and concentrates on the facts. Gives a very good depiction of life in the coal region at the time (much of the language, culture, etc. is still present in the region today). Also good background information on the Mollies origins in Ireland. A very scholarly work.

    Full consideration of a complex historical event

    Kenny digs into the broader social and historical forces that operated in the Irish coal miners and the community in which they found themselves. The events under review are themselves shocking. Like the 9/11 attacks, they seem almost incomprehensible because of their violence and the drama surrounding the events. The Molly Maguries were more than simple killers -- the women's clothing, for example, is a clue that something beyond a simple murder. Kenny gives his explanation of WHY events unfolded as they did.
    Kenny has a scholarly point to make and academic readers will be rewarded with Kenny's solid analysis. This is a serious work on a serious subject. It is well worth a bit of intellectual effort. It also makes a fine addition to the reading list of an upper level undergraduate or graduate history course. However, the general reader with an interest in Irish-American history, labor history, and/or European immigrant history will also find this book interesting and informative.

    SHOCKING DETAIL

    After reading Mr. Kenny's account of the Mollys, I have a much better understanding of what really transpired in the coal fields of Eastern Pennsylvania over 100 years ago. Going beyond the typical view of the Mollys as a band of drunken criminals of Irish origin, Kenny tells of the political and corporate corruption that existed in the 1850s to 1880s. While not displaying total sympathy for the Mollys - since many did fit the stereotypical image, Kenny's accounts will change one's perspective of this group. Well worth reading.
