I received this book in High School as part of the "Electrical Installation" curricullum in January of 1986. At the advice of my instructor, Mr. Bergovoy, I didn't return the book at the end of the school term. I ended up having to pay for the replacement. However, this book has paid for itself thousands of times over the last 20 years. I recommend it to electricians ranging from the student to the master level..

If your looking for a book that is all meat, if your looking for the "bible" of motors, if your desire for motor knoweledge is from the most basic to advance knoweledge.....YOU have to buy this book. I am an electrician, and industrial controls technician and I have found no better book. I am looking through my well used second edition, that was given to me while in college in 1984, and if you could see just my first page of the book, at how much highlighting and notes in the margins there are, you would see that nearly every sentence in the book is packed full of useful information,...IF... you take the time to read it. I believe it is as clearly written as you can get on a technical subject. I consider myself just a slightly above average student, and even I could understand this material. From casual interest in motors to engineer, this book needs to be on your technical bookshelf, unlike other technical books at this price that I threw out after college, this is a keeper. Check out all the other reviewers here, then buy the book.

About the Author

Over the past 15 years Steve has been the world's leading direct marketing creative director. He has been the european creative director at OgilvyOne and worldwide creative director at Wunderman (these are the world's two biggest direct marketing networks). In between, he founded his own agency, HTW, which quickly became the benchmark for creative excellence not only here in the UK but around the world. He has won more major awards in his discipline than any other in the world. Those awards have been won on behalf of such clients as Xerox, Vodafone, IBM, American Express, Royal Mail, and Microsoft etc on both an international and domestic level. 
 
Steve has been the President of the Cannes Lions Direct jury (the first direct marketing creative director ever to be accorded that role) and a regular speaker at international events. This year he has been invited to give a keynote speech at industry gatherings in Dubai, Barcelona and Buenos Aires. As far as teaching in the local market is concerned, he has been a guest lecturer at the Institute of Direct Marketing for 11 years.  Some time ago, Campaign magazine said Steve is "the greatest dm creative of his generation."

All meat. No filler.

I would (and have) recommended this to anyone I can.

Steve Harrison lays out a clear, lucid point of view on creating, selling and managing a department that does just what the title claims.
His approach is simple, fundamental and all-to-often forgotten in every agency's and client's race to catch the next shiny object.
It's packed with clear recommendations and techniques -- not double talk and excessive self-promotion.

A great foundation book for anyone starting their career in marketing/advertising, but an even better refresher/wake-up call for all of use jaded vets.

Worth More Than It's Weight In Gold

I didn't realise the price of this book had rocketed like
this until I got an email from Drayton Bird. I'm just glad
I got one when it first came out. And it's still in mint
condition (I look after my books).

After that I had an email conversation with a copywriting
colleague about it. Here's how it went:

Me: Have you seen this from Drayton? - pointed to the email.
Colleague: £500? What on earth is it made of? Gold?
Me: Made of gold? The info in the book is worth more.

I also told my wife and mother. Both said I should consider
selling it.

My reply?

If I sell this book, I will never get it again. Even at this price.
And with the information it contains, I can make a heck of lot more.
Over and over.

Great collection -- but beware

This is a great collection of old stories from 1965. But what I learned only after is that the paperback publishers basically split the Random House hardcover edition (ghost-edited by Robert Arthur) into two paperbacks: Stories Not for the Nervous, and More Stories Not for the Nervous. You need to buy both papers if you want all the stories that were included in the classic hardcover, Stories Not for the Nervous.

The "More" edition contains the famous story "For All the Rude People" by Jack Ritchie and the classic "Sorry Wrong Number" by Lucille Fletcher.

The "More" edition DOES NOT contain the Ray Bradbury, Carter Dickson and Fredric Brown stories, for example.

Just worth mentioning. If you are selling these books, please list them carefully.

Pretty good collection

One of numerous collections of crime/thriller/weird stories attributed to Hitchcock, but probably edited by his staff. "The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes" and "Room with a View" were later made into episodes of Rod Serling's Night Gallery.

STORIES MY MOTHER NEVER TOLD ME

Stories My Mother Never Told Me is another in the series of short story collections Dell released in the sixties and seventies. Again, Alfred Hitchcock was not involved. This collection is primarily comprised of stories with either "shock" endings or fantastical elements.

There are thirteen stories here, by quite an impressive list of authors: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Shirley Jackson, Grace Amundson, Robert Arthur, Andrew Benedict, John Collier, Gerald Kersh, George Hitchcock, George Mandel, Richard Matheson, Jane Rice, Don Stanford, and Richard Wormser.

Unfortunately, not many of these stories are very spectacular. Several stories are interesting but lack punch at the end. Collier's "Witch's Money" I didn't see the point of at all. There are too many cannibal stories (you'd think one per volume would be sufficient). And there's an inferior take on Connell's classic, "The Most Dangerous Game".

On the whole, there's enough to keep fans of this type of thing entertained, but nothing particularly amazing.

J. Y. WONG, PhD, DSc, is Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Internationally recognized in the field of road and off-road vehicle dynamics, he is also the author of Terramechanics and Off-Road Vehicles and is a member of the editorial boards of a number of international journals. He has received numerous awards from learned societies for his research.

Handles both road vehicles and tracked vehicles

The book covers dynamics of ground vehicles over hard surfaces and unprepared terrain - mechanics of vehicle-terrain interactions, terramechanics. Tracked vehicles such as a military tank or a bulldozer that is propelled by tracks instead of pneumatic tires are also covered in detail in this book. There is also attention to air-cushion vehicles (hovercrafts). However, the guided ground vehicles which are constrained to move along a fixed path, such as railway vehicles and tracked levitated vehicles are not covered in this book.

There is a very good chapter on the mechanics of pneumatic tires, which has both theoretical and practical information. Attention is also given to performance of tires on wet surfaces. This issue is frequently overlooked by the other vehicle dynamics books; however, the behavior of tires on wet surfaces is of considerable interest from a safety point of view, as many accidents occur on slippery roads. The tire is also analyzed as both spring and a damper. There are useful graphs and tables in this chapter, as well as throughout the whole book. The table of damping coefficient of tires shows that the damping coefficient of tire drops with increase of the inflation pressure.

Mechanics of vehicle-terrain interactions studies distribution of stresses in the terrain under vehicular loads, empirical methods for predicting off-road vehicle performance, a computer-aided method for evaluating the performance of vehicles with flexible tracks, and so on.

Performance characteristics are covered separately for road and off-road vehicles. For the road vehicles, the author analyzes equation of motion and maximum tractive effort, aerodynamic forces and moments, vehicle power plant and transmission characteristics, prediction of vehicle performance, operating fuel economy, engine and transmission matching and braking performance. For off-road vehicles, the author examines drawbar performance, fuel economy of cross-country operations, transport productivity and efficiency, mobility map and mobility profile, selection of vehicle configurations for off-road operations.

Handling characteristics of road vehicles and steering of tracked vehicles are also separately analyzed.

There is a very good chapter on vehicle ride characteristics and human response to vibration.

I also recommend "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" by William F. Milliken and Douglas L. Milliken, which is also a good compromise between theoretical and practical information.
