The third edition of Haskell: The Craft of Functional Programming is essential reading for beginners to functional programming and newcomers to the Haskell programming language. The emphasis is on the process of crafting programs and the text contains many examples and running case studies, as well as advice on program design, testing, problem solving and how to avoid common pitfalls.

Revisions to this new edition include new material on testing and domain-specific languages and a variety of new examples and case studies, including simple games. Existing material has been expanded and re-ordered, so that some concepts - such as simple data types and input/output - are presented at an earlier stage. The running example of Pictures is now implemented using web browser graphics as well as lists of strings.

The book uses GHCi, the interactive version of the Glasgow Haskell Compiler, as its implementation of choice. It has also been revised to include material about the Haskell Platform, and the Hackage online database of Haskell libraries. In particular, readers are given detailed guidance about how to find their way around what is available in these systems.

An accompanying web site supports the book, containing all the program code, further teaching materials and other useful resources.


Simon Thompson is Professor of Logic and Computation in the School of Computing at the University of Kent. His research and teaching interests include functional programming and logical aspects of computer science. Simon has written three other books: Erlang Programming (co-authored with Francesco Cesarini),  Miranda: The Craft of Functional Programming and Type Theory and Functional Programming.

About the Author

Simon Thompson is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Kent. His research and teaching interests include functional programming and logical aspects of computer science.

Best Haskell introduction out there, but there are some flaws.

1. very well explained with many pictures and examples.
2. based on Haskell 2010(third edition)

Cons :

Learning Haskell is like learning C. Many of the language features are really easy, but some key features are challengeable.

When learning C, most of syntax/semantics except arrays and pointers can be learnt within few days, or even hours. But then, you would have hard time to master pointers, arrays and memory management, etc.

Haskell is not that different. Basic arithmetic, functions, types, pattern matching, guards and even recursions, you could learn in short time. But type classes, lambdas(especially, those reductions) are a bit harder and finally, monads can be very frustrating.

I am generally satisfied with the contents of the book, but his explain about lambdas and monads is a bit sparely. I think, he worried about to introduce mathematics(especially, lambda calculus and category theory). But, the functional languages are different than those imperative languages, in that its root is pure mathematics. They have a small set of simple yet powerful rules, which enables many neat tricks, and many of the tricks actually come from mathematical thinking. When you want to fully understand and to use the functional languages properly, basic theories are somewhat unavoidable. Actually, you don't need to know such as undecidability, model theory or constructive logic, etc. but the basics of (untyped-/typed-)lambda calculus(especially those of reductions, evaluation orders and some of their theorems), category theory(monad is a bit hard here, because it lies in the deep sea of category theory, but functors, for example, can be easily explained) is very helpful for thinking about higher order things and its practical use. Also, you don't need so much effort to learn only the basics of them. Without that they are explained sufficiently, the tutorial is teaching only the subset of Haskell.

Don't get me wrong, this book is the most nearly complete Haskell introductory text out there with the support of Haskell 2010. I wrote the insufficient parts, because it could be the 'complete' introduction to Haskell, when the author didn't avoid the whole theory parts. And since I have read his "Type Theory & Functional Programming", I have an impression that he can present the theories easily understandable. When this part is supplemented, it can be compared to the legendary (and most complete) "C programming : A modern approach" by K.N.King in Haskell world.

So, despite of the cons, I'll give 5 stars, because it is actually much better than other Haskell books.

Good first read of Haskell

It is more attuned to a university student rather than a software professional trying to learn Haskell.
"Learn You a Haskell For Great Good!", I feel is a better first book for the software professional.
But both books are excellent.
Finally, I wish one of the Haskell authors would give a pragmatic description of Category Theory.
Category Theory is a "tough nut" to crack.

Lots of great photo's and information to detail not only the human skeleton and its life cycle progression but how to identify many causes of death.

Great book for kids

Was disappointed with the quality of books available for my kids ages 7 and 9 and looked for books i read as a child that were fun and clean. Was pleased to find Haunted Mountain for them. It has a great mix of adventure, fantasy, mystery, and fright that is perfect for kids. Also found new publications of 'Me and Caleb' and 'Me and Caleb Again', both great books for young boys. Book was as promised as far as condition.

Only true bibliophiles will understand when I ask: Do you remember those books that touched you when you were young? Those that simply spurred you to read further and become a genuine book lover? The Haunted Mountain was mine. It was a book that I read and promptly lost, and couldn't for the life of me remember the author's name or the title! It was a labor of love trying to discover this book for the second time! After countless internet searches I have finally found it! Mollie Hunter is amazing! This novel captures the imagination, the spirit of the Celts, their traditions and superstitions, and a land that thrived before the harshness of modernity drove out the sidhe and put an end to the Goodman's Croft. MacAllister is a wonderfully wrought protagonist, and his struggle with the fairies is vivid, full of adventure. There are elements of magic, love, lore, and sacrifice woven expertly throughout Hunter's novel. This book is an absolute jewel!

A must read for fourth or fifth graders, but not for 6th.

The Haunted Mountain is a half-good, half-bad book. Mollie Hunter mixes ideas of Celtic mythology with children's dreams. This fantasy takes place in a small town in the north of Scotland during the Celtic times. This story is filled with mythological characters from fairies to urisks, which are half man half goat. This fantasy is about a stubborn farmer named Mc Allister. He promises himself that he will never give the fairies his traditional piece of land. Throughout the story the fairies have tried several attempts to kill him. They finally capture him and make him their slave. It is up to his brave son Fergus to save him. I was quite disappointed in this book because the reading level was quite low. The characters were unrealistic and it was more a fantasy book than a horror story. Personally I prefer horror stories to fantasies. If you like fantasies, castles, and romance, this is and ideal book. If you're more like me and love horror stories, I don't suggest this book.

He says he was threatened and bribed in an effort to kill the project, but after 9/11 he finally decided to go through with this expose of his former professional life. Perkins, a former chief economist at Boston strategic-consulting firm Chas. T. Main, says he was an "economic hit man" for 10 years, helping U.S. intelligence agencies and multinationals cajole and blackmail foreign leaders into serving U.S. foreign policy and awarding lucrative contracts to American business. "Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars," Perkins writes. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man is an extraordinary and gripping tale of intrigue and dark machinations. Think John Le Carré, except it's a true story.

Perkins writes that his economic projections cooked the books Enron-style to convince foreign governments to accept billions of dollars of loans from the World Bank and other institutions to build dams, airports, electric grids, and other infrastructure he knew they couldn't afford. The loans were given on condition that construction and engineering contracts went to U.S. companies. Often, the money would simply be transferred from one bank account in Washington, D.C., to another one in New York or San Francisco. The deals were smoothed over with bribes for foreign officials, but it was the taxpayers in the foreign countries who had to pay back the loans. When their governments couldn't do so, as was often the case, the U.S. or its henchmen at the World Bank or International Monetary Fund would step in and essentially place the country in trusteeship, dictating everything from its spending budget to security agreements and even its United Nations votes. Perkins spent the 1970s working as an economic planner for an international consulting firm, a job that took him to exotic locales like Indonesia and Panama, helping wealthy corporations exploit developing nations as, he claims, a not entirely unwitting front for the National Security Agency. He says he was trained early in his career by a glamorous older woman as one of many "economic hit men" advancing the cause of corporate hegemony. He also says he has wanted to tell his story for the last two decades, but his shadowy masters have either bought him off or threatened him until now. The story as presented is implausible to say the least, offering so few details that Perkins often seems paranoid, and the simplistic political analysis doesn’t enhance his credibility. Despite the claim that his work left him wracked with guilt, the artless prose is emotionally flat and generally comes across as a personal crisis of conscience blown up to monstrous proportions, casting Perkins as a victim not only of his own neuroses over class and money but of dark forces beyond his control. His claim to have assisted the House of Saud in strengthening its ties to American power brokers may be timely enough to attract some attention, but the yarn he spins is ultimately unconvincing, except perhaps to conspiracy buffs.

Read to understand the nature & subtelty of the American global empire

After reading this book, this work gave me a totally new perspective on the halcyon period of my life growing up in Jakarta, Indonesia in the early 1980's. My father was a Vice President in finance credit & lease lending for the once bank Manufacturers Hanover (later merged to Chemical bank and finally to Citibank to grow its monopoly on banking), where he lent money mostly to the oil companies to finance their exploitation of the island's oil resources. Once where I viewed the exclusive private school I went to JIS (its where President Obama also went to when he grew up in Jakarta), the exclusive expatriate suburb Pondak Indah and the expensive American club, I now see as places to exclude and get away from the native population and their culture albeit the American embassy did at times have the occasional presentation on Indonesian culture. Since I was very young, I had a very dissembled view on the Indonesian native population. I also lived like the author for six months in the Hilton Hotel (though he stayed at the Intercontinental) paid by Manny Hanny and had the most fun eating all the food you can eat, play all the tennis & bowling you can. I know now I see a different take on the servants we had and the driver we had to drive our family all around Jakarta. What was their life like and what was their families like that had to do to sustain our lifestyle?

Its the central theme in John Perkins book. The exploitation of the many as indentured workers to serve the very few special rich. Its an intertwined web of corporations, governments and NGOs (Perkins calls this web the Corportocracy) to produce non-sustainable debt in third world countries that they can never pay off to eventually give our Country's corporations eventual exploitation of their resources as an ersatz for payment of their debt.

Perkins cites many other third world countries besides Indonesia like Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Venezuela,..etc that America has used this method of entrapping and having influence over using the EHM method of debt piling a country's balance sheet. Its very intriguing to read about if the politician does not go along with this and is assassinated by jackals hired by the CIA to overthrow that leader and to install a puppet leader to be used by the United States. This is not a spy novel but this is all common knowledge and Perkins is great in assembling and bring together all the knowledge that is out there on American global manipulation and putting it together in this book.

Perkins makes a good point that all this debt riddling of countries will eventually come to an end when the US dollar no longer is the world's reserve currency. As this debt would eventually need to be called and repaid. I do think Perkins should have mentioned that not only does the USA debt burden foreign countries but the US debt burdens its own citizens domestically also. American savings loans, US bank bail outs, QE1-3,..etc have also enlarged out domestic debt. So not only doesn't the American government do not really care about foreigners living off in far off lands, it essentially doesn't care about its own citizens. Add that in with State and municipal governments with huge pensions and debts it cannot repay, America is on the verge of bankruptcy. So this corpotocracy system seeks to exploits its own citizens may show that end is very near. Only at the end does the government animal cannibalize its own population.

Perkins does not explain why the EHM model changed from his time in the early 1970's with a NSA liaison training him specifically to exploit countries by fudging economic statistics to the time in the early 1980's when NSA government help was no longer needed. The new fresh graduates were somehow automatically brainwashed in the money Perkins was making to just accept the fact that to make a lot of money this is how to play the game. I really don't find that plausible and Perkins doesn't really clearly explain this in a cogent fashion for me to accept his explanation.

In summary a sublime work on the nature of empire building by the USA corportocracy in the 20th & 21st centuries. Of course the USA will fall inevitably probably in the next 10-20 years and we will be watching the rise of China take over the hill as the big dog and Mr. Perkins thesis that the US dollar will lose its status as the world's reserve currency will come to fruition and the USA global empire will crumble. Read this book now before the USA corporate empire becomes a memory in books about empires like the British, Ottoman & the Roman.

A Must Read! It Will Change Your Thoughts

The only reason I bought this book was for a Argumentative Writing class. This book did not teach me how to write a argumentative paper. It did however, open my eyes to a world I knew nothing about. I normally only read paranormal romance but this book I actually wanted to read and finish!

Even if what Perkin's says is the truth or a lie, it does open to some great debates. I never heard of the Panama Invasion in high school. After reading and doing a paper on it for my class I learned there are a lot of cover ups for what was really the plan. Thousands and thousands of innocent people died during the invasion. It was said they were going after one guy but a few days before Christmas thousands of people, men, women, and children were murdered. Some even had their hands tied behind there backs. Why, because they said they were going after a man who was dangerous. When in reality the U.S. was losing there grip on Panama and needed it back.

I always wondered why people around the world hated the U.S so much. This book is worth the read. If you want to educate yourself, I suggest you pick this book up and start reading.

A good, important message by Perkins, but hypocritical.

Perkins lays out what his job was for the American government:
Perkins was sent in with a proposition for newly-christened foreign leaders who were given an offer (that was unwise to refuse) of riches and comfort IF they accepted American corporations coming to their country to basically rape it for any and all raw materials, precious metals, energy, etc. If (and sometimes when) Perkins failed to cajole the leader into accepting this sellout offer, then said leader would find himself the victim of either a military putsch OR dead in a plane crash.

Perkins's book has an important message to impart in that the American government has exercised this ugly practice in literally DOZENS of countries since WWII -- sometimes multiple times in the same country. My contention with Perkins is with Perkins himself. Basically, he waited good and long (and made his nest egg $$$$$$$$$$) before making more money by writing this book about how he participated in raping some of the already desolately-poor countries on the planet. Anyone else see something wrong here? Now that he has made his gold, he now takes the opportunity to make more money preaching about the evils of the American empire? Think I'm being a harsh critic? When Perkins "left" his government service, he still employed his golden parachute by taking a job at a juicy American corporation and I might add, still kept his complicit mouth shut for YEARS.

An important message? You bet. However, let's not forget the millions who suffered under a system propagated by the author himself even after his conscience got to him and he left government service. I'd be FAR more impressed had he taken action immediately at the time rather than waiting years upon years while feathering his own nest.

Great for the chemistry and molecular biology major.

This organic chemistry textbook is great for the real hard core chemistry major and those people in the the fields of biochemistry, imunology, genetics and biophysics. The book assumes that the student has a good foundation in basic chemistry and that he/she is willing to learn material beyond the basic topic. The book has the best practice problems of any basic organic textbook.

The Running Bunny

Taylor (bunny shifter) is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's given a choice and it's not an easy one. He's being guarded by federal agents (cat shifters) and resettled into Dalton Falls. In his new life Taylor is able to own and run his own place called 'The Running Bunny'.

Nevada is the son of Gabriel / Gabby, (vampire). Gabby was the red headed motor mouth that was discovered to be Christian's son. The story of that is in Montana's Vamp (Brac Pack 16), but no mention of even a pregnancy, just the possibility. Nevada's other dad is Montana (wolf), a big huge bald headed man. Nevada is a wolf, has been raised in the Brac Pack, trained with the sentries, and is coming out of a bad relationship. He relocates to Dalton Falls and of course meets his mate Taylor.

This is a story with a lot happening around Taylor and Nevada and not a lot of romance and down time for the two. There was very little about the new pack that's forming in Dalton Falls. It was nice to see Montana pop up and while he helped, for me it was unclear if he took over or if Matt stood up as an alpha should. Matt isn't written like Maverick where he has a hand in every pie. A story is lacking when a new alpha doesn't take front and center when action is going down. . . . Especially when it affects his pack mate.

All in all a good continuation but it doesn't shine like the Brac Pack Series. I did read Montana's story after this one, just get to the history, and that one was much better written. This series is new, it has room to grow.

May I just add how frustrating it is trying to find this series on Amazon. Goodreads lists the series and Amazon is delayed a good month behind Siren Publishing. The third book is out yet not on Amazon. And Lynn Hagen's page here on Amazon doesn't list this one. I wrote a complaint to Amazon to clear that up. - Dan's Wife

Note: Was the crime boss (cat shifter/lion shifter) the same one as mentioned in the Twin's story?
I was a bit confused about humans taking care of a drug bust yet I thought shifters had their own justice? If that's true how come cats are guarding him and the guy arrested is a cat shifter yet somehow the guy goes free. It was confusing.

Okay Series.

This series is just okay for me. Much like the first book in the series, it once again didn't have the charm and humor of the original series. I'm really kind of disappointed how the children of the original Brac Pack turned out. I did like Taylor and much like the original series, the mates in this one really steal the show. If I hadn't read Ms. Hagen's earlier work, I probably would have liked this one more. It's just hard not to compare the two series and reading this one just makes me want to go back and read her earlier works. I don't want a carbon copy of her earlier series, but I do wish she would go back to her old tried and true formula for writing books. If it ain't broke, don't fix it is my motto.

I've read several of the original Brac Pack series. The writing was fair throughout those, as well, and it's a fairly repetitive series. I suspect that'll be the case here, too. I don't know what made the author start with these characters two books in (after introducing others that were actually pretty interesting in the first one). It's pleasant brain candy, on whole, however; I'm sure I'll continue with Gen 2 anyway. The author is pretty dependable when I'm looking for some light escape from reality.

Comprehensive, dependable and well-written

Just returned from six weeks in Spain with the Michelin guide at my side. Its comprehensiveness was unique compared to other publications. The maps were very helpful and drawings of key buildings. I wish there were more of them. There sere several key cities and places where I was shocked to be without a map. The Michelin guide often recommended sights that were worthwhile that the other guides simply ignored. Michelin's star ratings are highly dependable and very useful for prioritizing.

What's to say - it is a Michelin Green.

For this last minute trip, planning was a snap. I picked the three star cities I haven't been to, added a few two star towns Enroute to flesh out my trip, and I was done very quickly. While I'm not a cultural traveller, and Michelin has no sense of hip, cool or quirky, it got me to the right cities and told me what was worth seeing there.

Small print - hard to read - but good information

Like all Michelin guides this updated one has a lot of valuable information. But, beware of the small print. Not only is the print very small making it difficult to read but some pages are printed in light gray print which is even more difficult, some pages are printed on glossy, others on plain paper. You will need good lighting to read this - so be prepared. Also, it's good to note that this guide weighs 20 oz. - that's a lot of weight to lug around in your bag every day especially if you're only going to visit one or two areas of Spain and you have to carry the whole country around with you.

A quick informative book for new DJs

I bought this book to get a basic understanding of how to DJ and that's exactly what I got.

There really is no stone unturned with this book and it exposes the reader to many different DJing concepts. It is very quick to read cover to cover which is exactly what I was looking for. A no frills guide to DJing, plain and simple.

A few sections of the book may seem to state the obvious if you have any sort of background in audio or music but it is nice to have everything in one place rather than aimlessly googling bits and pieces of info on the web. This book confirmed a lot of my suspicions about DJing and was well worth the money.

Great primer on the art/business of DJ'ing

This book delivered in ways I wasn't expecting. I purchased this for the more technical portions of the book, and while still relevant, the content is very dated (published in 2002) in regards to digital formats, and promoting one's self on the internet.

The portions of book dedicated to DJ technique were strong, but I felt like alot of the information contained there was vague. How exactly do you write about combining music in a way that empowers it? It all comes down to personal taste. And experience, developing an ear for what sounds right. Pictures of different scratch techniques won't mean much without knowing the sounds you're going for. And pictures of beat matching won't make any sense unless you've sequenced beats before. I've done all these things before so it worked out for me.

The real value in this book was about the DJ culture. Where to find gigs, how to know your audience, how to read a room. The differences between warming up a crowd and playing peak hours. These chapters were real gems, indispensible wisdom for people like myself without friends in the business. I felt like it was worth the price of admission for just these chapters.

The only thing I would ask for would be more chapters dedicated to different musical styles, and mixing them. It felt like a gaping hole in the book.
