Don't know what to say............

I did not care for this book in the least. "Twice back from the dead......Vero wants to fly...." Those two phrases repeated over and over and over and over and over.....well, you get the idea how annoying it is. In my opinion this was a senseless jumble of words and ideas that were hard to follow and made too little sense to consider this a novel worth reading. I feel like Lisa Gardner is losing her touch in creating a great mystery that you can just dive into and thoroughly get lost in. I can't in good conscience recommend this book to anyone. Truly awful!

Gardner blends mystery, suspense, and thriller elements seamlessly into one heck of a read!

Lisa Gardner is one twisted lady and I mean that in the most complimentary of ways, of course. Otherwise, she wouldn't be so good at what she does and believe me, she's good.

In every Lisa Gardner novel, each one is drastically different, while still sharing the same traits as all of the others: more twists and turn than you can shake a stick at, combined with villains and victims alike that are all morally ambiguous. There is a definite shade of grey to be found in Gardner's novels, and Crash & Burn is a perfect example of that fact. The bad guys aren't always bad in every sense of the word, but more importantly, the good guys aren't always as good as they want to be perceived.

In Crash & Burn, the action happens immediately from the first page. A woman, seemingly the victim of her own making in a drinking and driving accident, crawls up a ravine afterwards in search of rescue. After being loaded into an ambulance, Nicky Frank pleads to everyone listening that a little girl, Vero, is missing and needs to be found. Naturally, the police immediately start a search for the missing child, coming away with more questions than they have answers and evidence. According to Thomas Frank, Nicky's husband, there is no child, there is no Vero, it's all just a figment of Nicky's thrice-concussed brain. Such brain trauma would lead to false memories, fantasy pasts, a definite inability to separate the fact from the fiction. Nicky's brain injuries also lead to more questions for the police; how does one woman end up with three concussions in a span of 6 months? And is Vero real? In short bursts of coherence, Nicky's recollections seem more like truths, which just leads the police deeper and deeper into a twisted mystery.

Although this isn't one of Gardner's famed D.D. Warren novels, fans of hers will be delighted that she does make an appearance. Still recovering from past injuries, D.D.'s future as a cop still hangs in the balance. Another recurring character, Tessa Leoni, plays a more prominent role in this novel. Aside from helping during the current investigation, her past is also still haunting her. Tessa is one of those great ambiguous characters that Gardner is so good at. While her story has already been told, it's definitely far from over. I will be waiting with bated breath to see what the future holds for her regarding her own case, and also where she and Wyatt end up.

As with all of Gardner's novels, I recommend this for readers of thrillers and mysteries who love a good twist and turn. Gardner provides many and just when you think you've figured it out, she throws in some more. Despite some recurring characters, most of these novels can stand alone, but I recommend reading previous character-labeled novels just to get the full scope and get any missing backstory.

A Dynamic Read

The story starts out with a terrible car wreck…Vero wants to fly… and from there the story twists and turns and dives and twists some more. It gets terribly dark in places and has the reader thinking “Where can this author be taking us?”

Nicky Frank has had a life beyond imagination and has forgotten more than she remembers. She has had 2 recent events that cause concussions before the car accident and now her entire past is coming back to her is bits and pieces.

Sergeant Wyatt Foster doesn’t know what to believe. Nicky and her husband Thomas do not have much of a traceable past, no friends, no family. Is Thomas abusing his wife? Are her memories real or make believe? Could they be tied to other crimes? And if it happened, where did it happen? Why would someone want to kill Nicky Frank? He has very little physical evidence to work with and someone keeps trying to block the very slim trail it leads to.

Lisa Gardner is best selling author for a very good reason. Her stories are so dynamic that once you start reading you can’t stop. This is definitely a book that will cause a book hangover. Just when you think you have figured out what is happening or find a good stopping point Gardner twists the story inside out and you have to keep reading and reading and reading and then you reach the end and all you can say is WOW! I didn’t see that coming!

This story has been publicized as a stand alone with with a cameo by her fan-favorite character, Boston Detective D.D. Warren, but it seems to be the third book featuring Tessa Leoni with appearances by D.D. Warren. It also appears Tessa was introduced in books in the D.D. Warren series. I have read a few of Gardner’s FBI Profiler series and I grabbed this one because she was an author I truly enjoyed. Now I want to go back and read them all. Checking online these two series are very intertwined and some are listed as stand alones like this one so it does get pretty confusing.

I am usually a stickler for reading series books in order but I have to tell you this book does read excellently as a stand alone as advertized and If you like a really good psychological thriller you should add Cash & Burn to your list.

About the Author
Dr. George S. Pransky is a licensed marriage counselor who has worked with couples in a private practice for more than 25 years. He is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Counselors and is an adjunct professor of The Academy of Multidisciplinary Practice and is an adjunct professor of the Estate and Wealth Strategies Institute at Michigan State University.

This book is not at all like the other relationship books.

I collect self help books. I happened upon this book while going through my mom's things after her death. It is an older book, but with a dramatic difference from other self help books. I have learned so much positive information that actually makes sense. It is about compassion, intelligent conversation and actions. It shows how we over-react to situations and then things get all out of porportion. It also tells how to fix it and this is the one book that suggests that you alone, without the help of your partner, can put your relationship back on the right track. It is as basic and yet profound as can be. The main ideas is to use positive reinforcement and positive therapy to enable permanent change in relationships and their dynamics.

Very helpful

my husband and I have done a lot of work on our relationship, and were at a crucial turning point (for the worse!) when a friend suggested this book. It was incredibly helfpul and counter much of what the typical relationship books say --- don't talk about the past! Don't go into couples counseling! (I had been saying we need to go back and look at the past, we need to do couple's counseling, my husband was totally against it). It's really about connecting with your loving feelings for each other. (If you are driving down the road with your spouse and all is well, and suddenly you realize he didn't take out the trash the night before and that makes you angry, is it really a good idea to bring that up just to prove a point or do you want to reconnect with the good feelings and let that anger pass by like a cloud?) This little book is packed with simple thoughts like that which have transformed my need to be right over my husband for all of his (supposed) infractions -- not an easy task!

About the Author
Robert Bauman is a professor of biology and chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas. He teaches microbiology and human anatomy and physiology. He received an M.A. degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in biology from Stanford University.

His research interests have included the morphology and ecology of freshwater algae, the cell biology of marine algae (particularly the deposition of cell walls and intercellular communication), and environmentally triggered chromogenesis in butterflies. He is a member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Texas Community College Teacher's Association (TCCTA), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and The Lepidopterist's Society. When he is not writing books, he enjoys spending time with his family: gardening, hiking, camping, playing games (with lots of laughter), and reading classics out loud by a crackling fire.

Buy the third edition!!!!

The third and fourth edition are almost exactly the same!!! The pages and chapters even match up that's how similar they are! The 3rd edition is selling for about $40 used or $70 new for the hardcover so do not waste your money on this edition!

No teacher is going to require you buy the 4th edition, you will absolutely be covered with the 3rd. Also, don't buy the lab manual on here because school's tend to create their own hybrid manual specific to that University that you will have to order from their book store.

Beloved Textbook

This was the text for my undergrad microbiology class. Just finished my Micro class in med school...and once again it was my lifesaver (kind of annoying being forced to spent $1300 on the madated ebook package that I don't use...but I digress).

Firstly, this book is great because it's highly readable. It's not a dry text. Bauman clearly loves his topic and it shows. For example, in the opening section, he discusses Leeuwenhoek...the first guy to ever "see" microbes. He was tailor in the Netherlands who made his own microscopes to inspect wool...and eventually began looking at all sorts of things close up...including protozoa. And suddenly, we realized we weren't alone...that there was a world within our world (seriously...google "leeuwenhoek" and read his wiki page...that a guy worth knowing about).

In the rabies section there's a story about a mother who took her son to Louis Pasteur right after he'd been bitten by a rabid dog (Pasteur was at work on a rabies vaccine at the time)...the boy became one of a handful of people to ever survive rabies (he wound up working in Pasteur's labs as an adult...I googled that because it interested me)...and for kicks I also, looked up a translations of Pasteur's paper on his vaccine. It's kinda sad because it involved injecting tons of rabbits with rabies...but given how devastating rabies is...to humans and animals alike...it was certainly worthwhile work.

Anyway I don't know why...but "fleshing out" the story of diseases or the history of microbiology really gives the facts a much more lasting context. It makes it all more important...and sort of helps me remember that there's a reason why I pore over these textbooks...that we're (as students of science) a continuation of the work and effort that's come before.

I feel like a lot of that gets lost in our modern education system and it's a shame (especially with internet...when it seems like the reverse should be true...it's never been easier to get the bigger picture of the story)

I don't mean to suggest that the book is long-winded...its not...it gets to the point...with a few memorable sentences strewn in when there's some interesting back story to a bug. And those little facts also helped me when I was making memory aids to keep all the microbes/viruses/fungi/helminths/(and their respective drugs) straight.

TL;DR: Buy this book. You'll actually want to read it.

great text

This text is very helpful with its readable language and diagrams. It provides a sufficient review of basic biology and is written so that one could technically skip chapters and still understand the topics. The text's website and CD provide excellent review tests, flashcards, and animations.

However in some sections and chapters, the author has not organized the flow very well, especially the immunity chapters, and the text goes a little too deep for a 1-term college microbiology class. Its strengths outweigh the negatives enough to give it 5 stars.

Stunning and beautiful cookbook

This has been one of the most anticipated cookbooks of the year, and it does an incredible job of highlighting the food and philosophy of Mugaritz. Rated one of the best restaurants in the world, this Spanish restaurant is quickly becoming the epitome of refinement and perfection. Dishes are not overdone or complex, but limited in components that have been agonized over and brought to a level beyond what most restaurant even attempt.

The first third of this book is a must-read on the history, philosophy, process, and style of Mugaritz. It shows how the restaurant's dishes constantly fluctuate based on seasonality, how ideas form and are developed, and how the restaurant itself functions.

The rest of the book are recipes from the restaurant, and while there are 70-some recipes, one gets the feeling (and rightly so) that this is only a tiny sliver of a glimpse into the food of Mugaritz. The photography is beautiful and simple, with white plates always washed out into a blank white page, leaving just a small simple shot of the food itself in the middle of the page. The dishes are equally simple in presentation; few components with clear focus on the main ingredient.

While this is a stunning and lovely book, I do have a couple qualms about it. This book belongs in the league of the Alinea, Fat Duck, Quay, Noma, and Eleven Madison Park cookbooks. It is lovely and really almost a book of art. However, it seems the least approachable of all of these. In the back of the book, the reader is cautioned that the recipes are best attempted by experienced cooks, but the larger challenge seems to be acquiring the ingredients. There are food science ingredients that one familiar with Alinea and the Fat Duck will be completely unfamiliar with. There are other vegetables and leaves that lovers of Noma will be stumped by. While one could salute Mugaritz for highlighting such obscure and rare ingredients, it does limit its functionality as a "cookbook." While many of the cookbooks in this league are daunting and complex, many still have recipes that are worth attempting (even at home), but even as a professional chef, I found many of the Mugaritz recipes surprisingly complex.

This book is, nonetheless, a must for chefs and foodies who appreciate the art of fine cookbooks.

Mugaritz, worth it if you know of it

Extremely well done and worth every penny. (pre ordered mine for $25!)
the first part of the book delves into the philosophy, history and perspective of Aduriz's kitchen and cooking style, and unlike most other chef/restaurant books, Aduriz keeps it short, concise and to the point, there are also short stories that relate to certain dishes and how they came about which is also helpful because it gives you an idea of how the chef's mind works and how he approaches thematic cuisine. There are also short discussion on front of the house choreography a custom made soundtrack for the restaurant, the "dining path" of the average Mugaritz diner, historical menu setups and back of the house duties that go on every night at this three michelin starred restaurant, and again it's concise but not wordy and gets to the point, found it very interesting.

Quality wise it's another hit from Phaidon, technically very similar to Noma but without the annoying indexes that make you have to turn to the recipes in the back, here the recipes and photos are together like most other high end cookbooks. Photography is excellent and makes Aduriz's austere style really stand out. Paper quality and binding are excellent as the books are printed in Italy. The cover is embossed with the stone texture shown on the cover. There are two tassles sewn into the binding as bookmarks.

Keep in mind, the style of Aduriz's cooking is very austere (even more than the "monk" the late Alain Chapel) there are some recipes that call for only two ingredients not including salt, pepper and olive oil, Aduriz pairs down his recipes to the most essential parts. The only problem with this approach is that for the average home cook, access to equipment Aduriz uses to extract flavors, make stocks and distillates cost tens of thousands of dollars. For the professional chef the techniques are a great reference and a study in simplicity and excellent quality ingredients (many of the stocks and jus are made in a gastrovac or in an immersion circulator and most only contain the said ingredient). Obviously when most recipes in the book have no more than 10 ingredients it's a given that the raw materials must be of the highest quality and in season.

Overall a great book which for the first time has some recipes from "Clorofilia" finally in English. For the hardcore foodie and professional in the know.

Stunning pictures, no compromise on the recipes

First up it must be said that the pictures of dishes are stunning. Each dish was photographed on a white plate and/or surface creating the impression of a small degustation portion that sits as comfortably on the page as it would in front of you in the restaurant.

Secondly, the influence of Ferran Adria is apparent throughout the text. Anduriz appears to have taken to heart both the extreme creativity and evolutionary approach of his mentor. It is apparent, however, that he has infused this with his own personality and abundant talent. Like Adria's El Bulli books, the first section of the book deals with his philosophy and approach to both cuisine and his diners. It also documents the evolution of new approaches over the time period 1998 to 2001. This includes which processes and techniques were added each year. For example, in 2006 they added impregnation sous vide, and rheology studies (the science behind edible bubbles). Dishes in the book that demonstrate each of these techniques are listed. Like Heston Blumenthal, Aduriz works with scientists to understand and evolve processes or sensory experiences and puts this to use in his recipes. To give an idea of the scale of the introduction, the first recipe only appears on page 94.

Now onto the recipes themselves. While many can be created in a more conventional kitchen, others are unashamedly modernist requiring (at times) access to a sous vide setup or combi-oven, a thermomix, a roto-vap, etc as well as a range of kitchen chemicals (xanthan gum, calcium oxide, pectin, and so on). Rather than making these appear exotic, Anduriz follows the tradition of many contemporary chefs and incorporates the techniques and equipment into his cooking as a matter of fact. I think this indicates an answer to the question of where modernist cuisine is heading. Not to obscurity as many suggest but more towards the mainstream as an element central to many chefs' everyday restaurant cooking.

This is a book that can be used by someone with quite advanced cooking skills and a willingness to undertake a number of different processes to create a dish. It is very much a restaurant rather than a home cookbook. The flavour combinations are exciting and delicate but be warned: this is a book of degustation-style and sized dishes. While these dishes could be placed at various stages within a conventional type meal schedule, making a complete dinner with them would require the creation of a number of complex dishes, which would be difficult to achieve in a home situation cooking by yourself. My preference would be to use individual dishes as either an appetiser, entree, or dessert in combination with other, more substantial, dishes.

In all, this is a welcome addition to the cooking library of advanced chefs who are comfortable using a wide range of cooking processes, including some that fit under the modernist category.

It's also a marvellous book to read and drool over the food pictures.

The Heroes gigantic debauchery completely put me off!

I would give this book more stars, if not for the fact the Hero was a total manh*re on a monumental proportions! I am not kidding! The things he did with all those strippers in his house in that bed were disgusting! Add the fact heroine never slept with anyone for 7 years because she loved him so much and he was swimming in women's skirt for all that time is not very romantic nor equal! I want fairness, I want my heroine enjoining sexual life and not holding back where the hero on the other hand is having sex with anyone that moves! This is not sexy not desirable! This is a contemporary romance, hence it should inspire equality and not encourage double standards! Why is the heroine untouched to show the dept of love for the hero, but he cannot have the same for her?...I admit the author made the Hero hard to like.. He calls heroine a "bi*ch" on numerous times and i cannot imagine my significant other calling me that nor I want to read that in my romantic escapism!

WOW! This book is a series, and I for one can’t wait for book two!! These two, Natasha and Josh are combustible to say the least. They both have insecurities, and tempers that get the best of them. With demons of their unforbidden relationship, it’s really taking Josh on a journey he really doesn’t want to deal with! Natasha and her sister, Bridget are two of the funniest characters! They are what sisters should be, honest, and have each other’s backs, no matter what.

Natasha has to deal with her untold truths to Josh, and with being a Psychologist she has the tools; however when dealing with your own issues it’s harder than dealing with her clients issues. This page turner had me enthralled for the first page. This is sexy, erotic and intelligent; not to mention laugh out loud at the antics all the characters get up too. Buckle up, and get ready for a thrilling ride; it’s one I want to continue.

Omg what a cliffhanger. I need the next book right now!!! I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. I've been sitting her tryin to find the perfect words to describe this story. Mystery, passion, heartache, heartbreak, hot sex, dirty talking, alpha male, love, secrets, and yes possible incest. Holy cow this book is full of everything. I literally could not put it down. Natasha and Josh have been above since they were teenagers. And neither of them have been able to find that kind of love since then. Now seven years later they are reunited. And let me tell you the fireworks are astounding. This book will blow you away. Amazing. Truly amazing!

The Beginning Of Making Sense Of It All

Learning how to use 3D in Flash and Flex can be daunting. The open source Papervision3D offers the potential of accomplishing some great things, quickly and easily, but the learning curve is steep, involving a lot of trials and, usually, far more errors. As with many such things, Papervision3D is a marvel from a development community whose technical strengths are not matched by clear writing ability. Paul Tondeur and Jeff Winder have addressed this with their recently released Papervision3D Essentials, from Packt Publications. The first such work in lucid English, its 394 pages are organized in thirteen well organized chapters, starting with the basics and progressively broadening the foundations in related aspects, such as shading and modeling. Included here and there, almost causally, are productivity enhancing tips and tricks that many seasoned and experienced Flash/Flex many not know exist. Chapter One has to be particularly commended, which plainly, clearly and simply details the steps to setup the Papervision3D environments for Flash, Flash Builder and Flex Builder, and includes a test program that helps validate the setup. Each chapter has detailed example project code, again for both Flash and Flex Builder. The examples are written in Action Script 3; those still using AS2 may have some problems in getting up to speed. This is an excellent starter book for learning how to use Papervision3D, with the examples and discussions left to expand into more complex and interactive development by the reader. A good book for beginners

I never used Papervision 3D (PV3D) before and I was looking for a resource to understand how it works in few time.

This book was the answer.
It provided me all the info I needed to develop my first basic 3d applications: it's quick to read ( i spent only 2 days to read whole the book), easy to understand and rich of samples, demo and exercises.
It doesn't require previous 3d knowledges and all the code is written for Flash CS* and Flex 3. You only needs to have ActionScript 3.0 fundamentals.

So, if you are a PV3D beginner and want to understand something more about this world I can suggest to buy it.

But....although it's a good PV3D overview, it's not enough.
Advanced topics are not covered so well and after few days I already needed more info to accomplish my tasks.
Naturally it depends from your targets and needs. If you would like to develop 3D photogalleries, 3d menu navigators or very simple 3d videogames you will get all the info you need and however it's a good starting point to understand the concepts and get more info from web.
If you already know PV3D probably it's not the right book for you.

Book was clear with clear examples. Great to get you going on papervision fast. I think much of the info should be available online but pv3d info seems too scattered, so save yourself some time and get this book.

If you're looking for really advanced answers they are probably not in here though.

An absolutely extraordinary and funny holiday tale to light the season

Lemony Snicket offers a bit of irony to the holiday season but with a dash of flavoring that may entice the curious to delve into the world of holiday traditions. The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming, A Christmas Story is a delightful tale that reveals the origins of the latke, a potato pancake that is part of the delicacies that many munch on during the traditional Hanukah celebrations. But Snicket brings the latke alive and shows it too is a part of the Christmas celebrations as he has the latke venture into the world of the symbolic meaning of the Christmas and Jewish holidays - each one is definitely closely linked and share a common bond historically and culturally.

The symbolic imagery clearly is narrated as the lakte meets his counterparts of the Christmas holiday that consists of a string of Christmas lights, pine tree, and candy cane. Each one somewhat educates and shares with the lakte how important it is to the Christmas season, and even suggests that it should have a Christmas carol. But throughout the story and the numerous convincing that the candy cane and the pine tree suggest, the latke is not quite convinced and it screams in "aaahhhhhhhhh!!!" of its denial.

The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming is indeed an eye-opening tale for all ages to read during the Christmas and Hanukah holiday season. And with every Snicket tale, there is always a lesson to be learned or pondered upon.

Fun Little Book

This is a cute book. I'm not familiar with Lemony Snicket's other books so I probably don't appreciate it as much as his fans, but I bought it for a Hanukkah gift for my father and I think he's going to find it amusing. The illustrations are nice, and the story is short and probably appropriately for older children. It also works in parts of the story of Hanukkah, but is mostly a story about trying to explain something and being misunderstood, which is probably an idea a lot of kids can relate to. It's a hardcover book, and the cover is beautiful.

We purchased the book because it was the "shortest" story we could quickly get ahold of for my daughter's author project on David Handler, aka Lemony Snicket. It is a wonderful short that holds true to his writing style. We couldn't read it without using Count Olaf's voice. It gave us some "food" for thought in terms of the tradition Hanukkah. We had planned on donating it to a local library but have decided to keep this one for ourselves and purchase one to donate.

Relatable, refreshing, to the point, and powerful.

I had the chance to read a pre-release version of this book and all I can say is wow. In Love with This Series

I've never read anything from this author that wasn't really, really good, and this book is no exception. In the second installment of the Wright Brothers Series (and if you haven't read Getting Schooled, you MUST), Devyn and Joseph go from being coworkers at odds to friends with the best of benefits...I loved watching their relationship grow. The dialogue, as per usual, was creative and fresh, their chemistry was intense and palpable, and the storyline flowed nicely. I thought that Devyn was a really great character. She was multilayered, complicated, and extremely likable (that's a difficult trifecta to pull off). I don't think that Joseph was as developed as she was. That's my one gripe about this book; CCJ always has really well rounded lead characters, but Joseph didn't seem as robust as some of the leads in her other works. In any case, the book was another hit. I hope that the next book in the series is about Eric (Devyn's brother) and Aviva (Joseph's friend)! They were so intriguing--I have to know more about them now; Justin's story can wait!

This novel became my relaxing Sunday read. The second novel in the Wright Brothers series did not disappoint. Although not as fiery as book one, the characterisation remains strong and the plot development continues to be good! I loved the beginning best but this did not take away from the interaction between Joseph and Dervyn. Looking forward to reading Justin's story.

I'm loving CCJ. She gives us a quick snippet of these characters lives. While I think book 1 was stronger, I am loving her writing style. I'm definitely looking out for all of her stuff.
