Very good book for CK prep, still not perfect
By Cylack Jones
Better than the 8th edition (which I also own). More algorithms, easier to read, more mnemonics and hints in the margins. Would recommend purchasing even if you own the 8th edition, which came out in 2012. Three years is a long time in terms of the Step and I don't want to risk missing out on any new facts. I still don't like the overall formatting, which is not in the exact style of the classic First Aid For Step 1 book.

However, still lacking in spelling out what the "next best step" would be in most cases. Would still need to buy MTB 2 to complement this book.

Probably the best Step 2 CK review book, but only 3.5 stars in my opinion
By Pete
If you have been on any forum or talked to other med students regarding Step 2 CK the inevitable line is: MTB2/3 for review and Uworld for questions.

But there are better resources out there.

Lets get one thing out of the way first: Step 2 CK success comes from the resources and studying you did in your clinical rotations, how well you did in Step 1, and from Uworld questions and their explanations. The review book is much less relevant here than in Step 1. Importantly, however, a review book organizes your thinking and provides a single location for all the high yield facts.

First Aid for Step 2 is a good source. Not a great source. But compared to the classical Mastering the Boards combo it is leagues better. It actually covers topics in reasonable detail, especially IM topics, that MTB seems to shallowly skim over. While it is not as easy of a read, it is also not utterly worthless. MTB is made for people who just don't remember the disease. FA is made for people who dont remember specifics in pathophys and basic treatments of disease. In short FA is more detailed which makes it harder to finish but more useful if you actually plan on using a review book.

It is not perfect at all however. The pediatric section, while just as good as other review books, is horribly inadequate such that I annotated (from Uworld) to the point of wiping out all the margins in several pages in that book. The cardiology section does not have treatments for various arrhythmias nor talks about clinical decision making in such primary care topics as hyperlipidemia (the section is in the book, but the indicates for moderate vs high dose statins is not). The Gyn/OB chapters are passable but things like vaccinations to be given in pregnancy are not discussed, while other topics like screening for cervical cancer are presented as a wall of text rather than a flow chart.

Other topics are covered with more or less decent consistency. But oddly some topics will mention a disease but never mention the treatment or next best step which is unbelievably frustrating for a test which asks 90% of the time what the next best step (not the pathophys) is. Again this problem is glaring in the peds section.

The psych section was no better than the Step 1 version and even didn't include the ego defenses. It did have a bereavement vs depression table which is a high yield point for sure.

No surgery chapter. Sure some of the topics is under the header of "assorted topics in EM" but that is just silly considering it is a fundamental rotation.

In conclusion the book is good. Not great. If some sections were beefed up and the topics were covered more concisely and ALWAYS including treatment, then we are golden. If you plan on using a review book for Step 2 use this one. If you still prefer MTB 2/3 because it is an easier read then you are better off just doing questions.

They borrow a lot of tables and images from FA for Step 1 so it's very use this book just like I did for step 1 ie annotating as
By farirn
I own the 8th edition which had a lot of terrible/useless figures and was outdated/not up to date so I was skeptical about buying this new edition. But I did and am not dissapointed! They borrow a lot of tables and images from FA for Step 1 so it's very use this book just like I did for step 1 ie annotating as I go through UWorld. It's more clinical and focuses on common diseases than rare ones (unlike Step 1). The only thing to be aware of is that there are no figures for algorithms for management or evaluation of disease. It's all in pros or bullet format which is fine with me.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress: A Novel, by Dai Sijie

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is an enchanting tale that captures the magic of reading and the wonder of romantic awakening. An immediate international bestseller, it tells the story of two hapless city boys exiled to a remote mountain village for re-education during China’s infamous Cultural Revolution. There the two friends meet the daughter of the local tailor and discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation. As they flirt with the seamstress and secretly devour these banned works, the two friends find transit from their grim surroundings to worlds they never imagined.

From Publishers Weekly
The Cultural Revolution of Chairman Mao Zedong altered Chinese history in the 1960s and '70s, forcibly sending hundreds of thousands of Chinese intellectuals to peasant villages for "re-education." This moving, often wrenching short novel by a writer who was himself re-educated in the '70s tells how two young men weather years of banishment, emphasizing the power of literature to free the mind. Sijie's unnamed 17-year-old protagonist and his best friend, Luo, are bourgeois doctors' sons, and so condemned to serve four years in a remote mountain village, carrying pails of excrement daily up a hill. Only their ingenuity helps them to survive. The two friends are good at storytelling, and the village headman commands them to put on "oral cinema shows" for the villagers, reciting the plots and dialogue of movies. When another city boy leaves the mountains, the friends steal a suitcase full of forbidden books he has been hiding, knowing he will be afraid to call the authorities. Enchanted by the prose of a host of European writers, they dare to tell the story of The Count of Monte Cristo to the village tailor and to read Balzac to his shy and beautiful young daughter. Luo, who adores the Little Seamstress, dreams of transforming her from a simple country girl into a sophisticated lover with his foreign tales. He succeeds beyond his expectations, but the result is not what he might have hoped for, and leads to an unexpected, droll and poignant conclusion. The warmth and humor of Sijie's prose and the clarity of Rilke's translation distinguish this slim first novel, a wonderfully human tale. (Sept. 17)Forecast: Sijie's debut was a best-seller and prize winner in France in 2000, and rights have been sold in 19 countries; it is also scheduled to be made into a film. Its charm translates admirably strong sales can be expected on this side of the Atlantic.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This beautifully presented novella tracks the lives of two teens, childhood friends who have been sent to a small Chinese village for "re-education" during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Sons of doctors and dentists, their days are now spent muscling buckets of excrement up the mountainside and mining coal. But the boys-Luo and the unnamed narrator-receive a bit of a reprieve when the villagers discover their talents as storytellers; they are sent on monthly treks to town, tasked with watching a movie and relating it in detail on their return. It is here that they encounter the little seamstress of the title, whom Luo falls for instantly. When, through a series of comic and clever tricks and favors, the boys acquire a suitcase full of forbidden Western literature, Luo decides to "re-educate" the ignorant girl whom he hopes will become his intellectual match. That a bit of Balzac can have an aphrodisiac effect is a happy bonus. Ultimately, the book is a simple, lovely telling of a classic boy-meets-girl scenario with a folktale's smart, surprising bite at the finish. The story movingly captures Maoism's attempts to imprison one's mind and heart (with the threat of the same for one's body), the shock of the sudden cultural shift for "bourgeois" Chinese, and the sheer delight that books can offer a downtrodden spirit. Though these moments are fewer after the love story is introduced, teens will enjoy them at least as much as the comic and romantic strands.

From Library Journal
This deceptively small novel has the power to bring down governments. In Mao's China, the Cultural Revolution rages, and two friends caught in the flames find themselves shuttled off to the remote countryside for reeducation. The stolid narrator occasionally comforts himself by playing the violin, and both he and more outgoing friend Luo find that they have a talent for entertaining others with their re-creations of films they have seen. A little light comes their way when they meet the stunning daughter of the tailor in the town nearby, with whom Luo launches an affair. But the real coup is discovering a cache of forbidden Western literature including, of course, Balzac that forces open their world like a thousand flowers blooming. The literature proves their undoing, however, finally losing them the one thing that has sustained them. Dai Sijie, who was himself reeducated in early 1970s China before fleeing to France, wonderfully communicates the awesome power of literature of which his novel is proof. Highly recommended. Unintended Consequences
By John Petralia
Unintended consequences. It's what frequently happens when you try something for the first time. You know, like Dr. Frankenstein's experiment with creating life. Christopher Columbus looking for a new route to India. Alexander Graham Bell calling for Watson. Banning Books. Thalidomide. Nuclear Power. Slavery. Smoking. Deforestation. The Automobile. Almost anything you can think of comes along with unintended consequences. Some good. Some not so good. Some, terrible.

In this novel, the author demonstrates the law of unintended consequences by telling the story of two privileged young men in China during the Cultural Revolution. They are being "reeducated" in a poor village far from their homes. There, they meet a beautiful seamstress who has not been exposed to books, western music or the ways of the world. The boys set out to reeducate her, and, in so doing, woo her. One plays Mozart for her on his violin and skillfully acts out scenes from popular movies. The other reads to her from a forbidden cache of western books by Cervantes, Hugo, Tolstoy, Dumas, Flaubert, Bronte, Balzac and other luminaries.

Because the story is related in simple language, often with slapstick humor, what should be an oppressive nightmare reads like a fairytale complete with a Cinderella, two Prince Charmings and more than one wicked villain. In the end, irony prevails over passion, demagoguery, and the best intentions of the various "reeducators".

I found it a dull read, but I may be missing something
By Amazonian
I am not a fan of this book, but I read it for a book group. Everyone else thought it was touching, suspenseful and deep. I was the lone dissenter. They read much more into the characters than I did. I found it a dull read, but I may be missing something.

Unputdownable !
By Koonu
Read it in one sitting within 24 hours of buying. Author has a remarkable flair for storytelling just like other recent English writers of Chinese origin Ha Jin (In the pond, Waiting) and Adeline Yen Mah (Falling Leaves, Chinese Cinderalla). Having myself grown up during adolescence in a remote part of India on a staple diet of western classics including Russian authors like Tolstoy and Chekov, I could empathise with the characters savouring Balzac in translation notwithstanding the cultural disconnect. I also felt guilty that unlike the characters of this book, two boys denounced during Mao's cultural revolution, just for having the wrong parents; I was privileged to be growing up in a free, albeit third world country with access to a decent public library in my own cozy home town. As the Econimist has rightly said in the blurb, this book is "A paean to the magic of literature" and "A true book lover's book" (pun intended). The little Seamstress had the last word in this 21st Century French novel written by a Chinese author, ..she had learnt one thing from Balzac: that a woman's beauty is a treasure beyond price !! This tells us that Dumas,Mozart,Balzac or Beethoven transcend man made national boundaries while pollinating intellectuual curiosity of adolescents of the global village.

Review
Personal space, outer space...What's the difference? In the case of Julia Cook's latest book, the difference is a riot. Let's face it, explaining the concept of personal space to children isn't exactly easy, but as an experienced educator and astute author, Julia Cook leads her lovable character Louis, a self-proclaimed space expert, on an enlightening journey of discovery. While this down-to-earth book will serve as your child's very own personal invitation to attend personal space camp, it is also guaranteed to leave you (and anyone else who has any reason to interact with children) laughing your way out of the bookstore. --Laura A. Jana, M.D.

Review from Books That Heal Kids
By Books That Heal Kids
Julia Cook's books are an absolute hit with our students. I was ecstatic when I found Personal Space Camp. I'd already been using My Mouth Is A Volcano to reinforce school skills like raising your hand and waiting your turn to talk. But what about when kids are in each others space during 'carpet time' or pushing and shoving in the cafeteria line? These behaviors can make instruction difficult and cause a lot of teacher angst. I don't know how many times I've had to say, 'Please, keep your hands to yourself.' Personal Space Camp is a life saver book. Angst will be decreased!

Okay, so in defense of the kids - developmentally it's really difficult to sometimes be in control of yourself. Kids need to move and wiggle around. However, they need extra guidance building awareness of themselves and those around them before the wiggling offends another student. When there are 20 some bodies in a classroom - we have to learn to work and live together. And newsflash - negative reinforcement doesn't build awareness - it just makes kiddos feel bad. I use Personal Space Camp as a social awareness teaching tool because it makes kids feel GOOD about themselves. They love learning about the concept of personal space and how it can affect others positively and negatively. Most importantly, the story is engaging and Louis is a VERY likeable character. We also copy Louis and use the same strategies in the book. The kids love being jammed into a hula hoop and reflection gets those light bulbs flashing about personal space. And here is the best part, author Julia Cook wrote a supplementary activity and idea book!! Activities galore! I got my hands on it this Spring and started integrating the lessons in small groups. The main reason the guide rocks is because the activities provide cool visuals for the students. Yep, your lessons on personal space just got even MORE engaging! Educators, get this one on your shelf. When teaching classroom routines, make this part of your curriculum.

Good book but definitely for elementary school aged kids
By J. Poe
I bought this book for my son, who is 3.5, and having some personal space issues in preschool. There aren’t many personal space books out there so I purchased a variety of similar books, hoping that something would resonate with him. This review is for parents of kids the same age, who might find themselves in a similar situation. My son loves reading, so I was hoping this story would hit home for him. However, although the publisher says age 4/preschool and up, it is a bit lengthy for someone his age. I have tried a few times, but so far we have only made it about half way through the book before he loses interest. It is a cute concept, but I definitely feel like it is more for kids of elementary school age. When my son hears and sees space and rockets, he thinks literally of space and rockets and has a hard time transitioning to the concept of personal space. Granted, I think personal space is hard to describe to a 3 year old because it is so abstract. However, my son has seemed to take more interest in “Cool Down and Work Through Anger” by Cheri Meiners. Although that one isn’t directly related to personal space, it does give examples of one kid jostling another and makes the point that you should keep your hands to yourself. The text was also shorter, so I managed to keep my son’s attention through the whole thing. I am hoping this is a book my son will grow into.

Funny book on serious topic
By James Guilford
This book is great for those k-3rd grade kids who don't seem to understand that not everyone wants them in their face. Lois goes about his day crashing into people (flying through space) and is told he would have to go to Personal Space Camp. He is all excited because he imagines that he'll be flying rockets or getting to eat astronaut's ice cream. When he sees hoola hoops on the floor, he is confused... I love the gray pictures of Lois's imagination and how he views his world (or more appropriately, his out-of-this-world) experiences. At the end he finally realizes that he had misunderstood what others had been saying all along. The humor is just what this topic needs and it allows the kids to grow without being embarrassed.

Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World, by Dalai Lama

“A book that brings people together on the firm grounds of shared values, reminding us why the Dalai Lama is still one of the most important religious figures in the world.” —Huffington Post, “Best Religious Books of 2011”

Ten years ago, in the best-selling Ethics for a New Millennium, His Holiness the Dalai Lama first proposed an approach to ethics based on universal rather than religious principles. With Beyond Relgion, he returns to the conversation at his most outspoken, elaborating and deepening his vision for the nonreligious way—a path to lead an ethical, happy, and spiritual life. Transcending the religion wars, he outlines a system of ethics for our shared world, one that makes a stirring appeal for a deep appreciation of our common humanity, offering us all a road map for improving human life on individual, community, and global levels.

“Cogent and fresh . . . This ethical vision is needed as we face the global challenges of technological progress, peace, environmental destruction, greed, science, and educating future generations.” —Spirtuality & Practice

Review
"The most influential person in the world" Time magazine "He draws crowds that no other spiritual leader or politican could hope to match...he seems to look at life in a different way to everyone else" The Times "A man of great intelligence and charm...(the Dalai Lama) has become the lynch pin of hope for a great many people." Professor Robert Thurman, author of Infinite Life "This wise, humane book, an original work rather than a collection of talks, is an incisive statement of His Holiness's thinking on ways to bring peace to a suffering world." Publishers Weekly "An impressive guide for teaching religious tolerance and respect to readers of all ages." Kirkus

From the Inside Flap

An unprecedented event: a beloved world religious leader proposes a way to lead an ethical, happy, and spiritual life beyond religion and offers a program of mental training for cultivating key human values
Ten years ago, in his best-selling "Ethics for a New Millennium," His Holiness the Dalai Lama first proposed an approach to ethics based on universal rather than religious principles. Now, in "Beyond Religion," the Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way.

Transcending the mere "religion wars," he outlines a system of ethics for our shared world, one that gives full respect to religion. With the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a stirring appeal for what he calls a "third way," a path to an ethical and happy life and to a global human community based on understanding and mutual respect.

"Beyond Religion" is an essential statement from the Dalai Lama, a blueprint for all those who may choose not to identify with a religious tradition, yet still yearn for a life of spiritual fulfillment as they work for a better world.

Excellent, But Some Readers May Have Trouble With Terminology
By Mayflower Girl
I always learn something from reading/listening to H.H. the Dalai Lama. It doesn't matter that I'm not Buddhist. It doesn't matter that when listening to him, sometimes I struggle a bit with his accent (perhaps this is good, as I listen more closely). I always learn--and go away with the resolve to be a bit kinder, a bit more compassionate.

This book is no exception. It was a book I could only read a few pages of...before needing to think and contemplate what I read. I suppose I could have read it all in one night, but then I wouldn't have gotten as much out of it. It reminded me a lot of Karen Armstrong's Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life (Borzoi Books) Which I also highly recommend if you want to explore Compassion more.

The title, "Beyond Religion" may be off-putting to some--especially Americans who tend to love to identify their belief in God. Even though Western Europe may have more self-professed atheists/agnostics, the point is not that God is not necessary...but that there are certain values/ethics which do and should go beyond whatever religion one professes to believe. These are universal ethics...universal truths...such as compassion. If we, as a World, would look at the vast inequality which exists today and would operate out of a universal ethic of compassion--we'd have less inequality, less hunger, less wars, less problems.

In one part of the book, H.H. says he is sympathetic to Marxist/Socialism due to all of the inequality he sees--and I realize this might be off-putting for some. Please, go beyond it. Heck, re-read the Sermon on the Mount, or look at any great religious figure and you'll see that the Robin Hood principle is pretty universal. Christians are not supposed to live as billionaires while others starve. That is why it is so hard for a rich man to get into heaven. Do we need to switch to a socialist view point to achieve that? No, but we do need to be universally more compassionate to those in need. Think of what would happen if half of the money spent on influencing elections were actually spent on helping lift people out of poverty, or on education, or helping the hungry.

We do not need to be religious to live more ethical lives
By Tracy Marks
In ninth grade religious school, I attended a weekly class in ethics, a class oriented toward discussing, wrestling with and debating contemporary ethical issues. That experience had a lasting impact upon me, leading me to begin a lifelong process of defining and redefining my values, and attempting (too often unsuccessfully) to live in accordance with them. Inevitably then, I was drawn to read BEYOND RELIGION: ETHICS FOR A WHOLE WORLD.

BEYOND RELIGION by Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, addresses the need for us today to commit "to developing and applying inner values in our daily lives." Due to the waning influence of religion in the western world, to a loosening of ethical standards in the media, and the lack of responsible values-oriented parenting in millions of families, many of us lack a moral center of gravity, and are easily swayed by external influences.

Even those who are religious may not have internalized their values. Such internalization is not gained through commandments directed at the superego and beginning "thou shalt" or "thou shalt not." Rather, it involves the embracing of one's values at a cellular level, so that they penetrate into our very core and become an inner foundation directing every action.

Ethics may be one facet of religion but we do not have to subscribe to a particular religion in order to cultivate a personal and social ethical orientation. The Dalai Lama - although he does present Buddhist precepts in regard to ethical action, levels of understanding and kinds of generosity - takes a nonsecular approach. Clearly, and with a rare blend of simplicity and profundity, he delineates attitudes and practices that can enable us to live more consciously, compassionately and ethically.

I, for one, never experienced firsthand his substantial wisdom before reading this book. What impresses me most, along with the importance of his message, is the clarity and precision with which he elucidates the inner process of becoming a more self-aware, contented, responsible, self-directed, loving and generous human being.

The cornerstone of his philosophy of ethical living is based upon "actively promoting the positive inner qualities of the human heart that arise from our core disposition toward compassion, and learning to combat our more destructive propensities." He also tells us, "Disarmament is compassion in practice. What is required, therefore, is both inner disarmament, at the level of our individual hatred, prejudice and intolerance, and outer disarmament, at the level of nations and states."

The English language and most other Western languages as well lack an adequate vocabulary for delineating internal states. Without being encouraged to attune to our inner process, without being able to find the words to articulate what is happening within - and as a result, without being able to transcend conflicts in feelings and thoughts - we may easily remain adrift, without a center of gravity or reliable source of inner guidance. For those of us seeking the right words to anchor us and insights substantial enough to propel us beyond confusion, the Dalai Lama's lucid language and subtlety of thought provide an oasis amidst the shifting sands of empty verbiage.

He distinguishes between wise selfishness and foolish selfishness, as well as between biological compassion and cultivated extended compassion. He defines the context in which even benign emotions can become destructive and in which purportedly negative emotions can serve us. He speaks of both education of the mind and education of the heart, of the relationships between compassion and discernment, between self-respect and consideration for others.

He introduces Tibetan words and concepts such as soepa (the willingness and ability to endure suffering), and drenpa (remembering our true selves and bringing presence of mind into every moment). Such concepts help us to expand our awareness as we navigate our inner realms.

For me, the most meaningful chapter of BEYOND RELIGION is "Dealing with Destructive Emotions," because of the enlightening guidance the Dalai Lama presents in regard to the process of taming our inner dragons. Almost as instructive are his chapters on mindfulness and meditation, in which he introduces practices to help us further self-awareness and self-mastery.

I hesitate to raise criticism of so rewarding and well-crafted a book - and indeed what follows is less criticism than it is an acknowledgement of dark and foreboding facets of our psyches that I wish the Dalai Lama would explore in more depth. He was raised to be a spiritual leader, to repeatedly cultivate his intention and capacity to live an ethical life and master the regressive and destructive facets of himself - in the face of unimaginable atrocities perpetrated upon his people and homeland. But for many of us who lacked such an upbringing, the energy of old and often unconscious habits and complexes may too frequently overpower our fragile intentions. The process of developing even the most rudimentary degree of mindfulness and self-mastery is painstakingly slow.

But we cannot expect him to map out every step of the way. What Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, does present in BEYOND RELIGION is rich in value and capable of catalyzing our own motivation to take the next step. He encourages us to develop patience, a long-term perspective, and the willingness to endure suffering. Along the way, he introduces us to the Tibetan concept of chogshe - "knowing what is enough... knowing when to be contented, being able to find satisfaction without looking for more." That may well be my next lesson. Read BEYOND RELIGION if you wish to clarify yours.

Read BEYOND RELIGION if you wish to more fully define your own values, to commit more fervently to live by them, and to help develop and promote a universal ethics that humanity needs to embrace if we are to survive.

Transforming the World
By Gea
Beyond Religion is a great book for people who would like to have a spiritual life or develop a spiritual path without participating in a religious tradition. The practice of religion is dwindling in the world, and the Dalia Lama, as always a visionary, believes it's time for the world to move beyond religion to a system of ethics and compassion. The great thing about Buddhism and the Dalia Lama is that they both are adept at teaching concrete physical, mental and verbal practices that help us transform our minds and behaviors. It's one thing to simply say that we must all be more compassionate and equanimous, but in Beyond Religion the Dalia Lama tells us what we can do to strengthen these qualities within us and why it is helpful to do so. One does not have to be a Buddhist to grasp these principals, but a strength of the Buddhist tradition is that it has developed many practical exercises over two millennia for training the mind and developing our spirit.

One of the most interesting things the Dalia Lama says in this book is that almost all the world's problems can be traced back to a failure of individual morality. If we can all develop and strengthen our inner values then we truly can transform the world.

I would recommend Beyond Religion to people who were not very familiar with Buddhism, but were interested in developing a spiritual path-- especially outside of a religious tradition-- and in training their mind.

Review by Robin Lee, An Amazon Top 500 Reviewer

Spaces is an excellent continuation of the science fiction adventure Cycles Series. Author Lois D. Brown always puts a lot of research into these two stories. You have your mix of astronomy, medical science, archaeology, ancient rituals, and now the paranormal. This was a non-stop page turner all the way to the shocking, completely unexpected ending.

Back cover text for Spaces, a young adult mystery:

Renee can change her name.
Her home.
Even the way she looks.
But she can't change the person who wants her dead.

Something waits for Renee . . . in the Spaces

Great science fiction for kids
By Michelle Isenhoff
Spaces is the sequel to the award-winning novel, Cycles. I read Cycles. I like Spaces even better!

Spaces takes place in a present day high school yet still contains a cast of characters I actually like instead of the usual stereotypical archetypes. Her plot is an edgy page-turner complete with some spine-tingling paranormal activity that I wouldn't hesitate to hand off to my kids. It's clean! And the hauntings are explained with science and logic (it's still fantastical) instead of taking an uncomfortable dip into the spirit world. Two thumbs way up!
