I bought this book to help me teach a class. It was exactly what I needed and much better than I expected! I'm going to read it to my young ladies class and we'll carve pumpkins. What fun!

About the Author

Paul Scherz is a Systems Operation Manager who received his B.S. in physics from the University of Wisconsin. He is an inventor/hobbyist in electronics, an area he grew to appreciate through his experience at the University’s Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics and the Department of Plasma Physics.

Dr. Simon Monk has a degree in Cybernetics and Computer Science and a PhD in Software Engineering. Dr. Monk spent several years as an academic before he returned to industry, co-founding the mobile software company Momote Ltd. He has been an active electronics hobbyist since his early teens and is a full time writer on hobby electronics and open source hardware. Dr. Monk is the author of numerous electronics books, including Programming Arduino, Hacking Electronics, and Programming the Raspberry Pi.

Great book, but a fail on the Kindle...

For a little background, I own a previous paperback edition of this book from years ago which is buried in storage. As I look into making several projects now that my 3D printer build is complete, I find myself in need of a refresher. I was overjoyed to see a new edition of this book had been released and was available on kindle. Now 20 minutes and 14 pages into the book I've given up and will be buying the paperback edition. In those first 14 pages I encountered 2 places where example calculations should have been displayed and an instance where the symbol for a battery was to be shown. All three situations just had a blank space with references in the text to the missing information the only indication that something was missing . As a result it's not worth my time to continue since I'm not willing to deal with the frustration of this which I assume will continue through out the text.

It's a shame too, since I thought the index was well laid out, liked the hot links within the text that take you to other referenced sections of the book and know that the content of the paper edition is probably outstanding. Thank goodness that Prime will get the physical book to me quickly.

04/20/16 Edit: I've raised the rating of this book from 1 to 3 since I received the physical edition of the book which is awsome and I realize the 1 rating was a little harsh. That being said, I firmly believe that if you are going to publish a kindle edition of a nonfiction book, it must be identical to the physical edition. Someone purchasing the kindle edition should be able to receive the exact same information in a kindle edition as in a physical edition. If you can't publish a book like that, I don't think it should be published as a kindle at all.

I've also added a couple of images from the physical and the kindle edition of the book to illustrate the issue that I'm talking about.

And It Just Keeps Getting Better!!

I have been using this book to teach a university introductory electronics class for several years, starting with the second edition, through the third edition, and will now start using the Fourth Edition this fall. It is an excellent book at an excellent price. The real value of this book, as I shared with my previous reviews, is the breadth of information that is covered. This is a book that should be on the shelf of any engineer who will ever have to deal with any question of electricity or electronics. Does it cover every topic in exhaustive detail? No, and that is part of its strength. It gives enough information for the novice to get the concept along with ways to find more information. A new chapter has been added on programmable logic, which continues to grow more day by day.

In addition to the traditional material on electricity concepts such as voltage, current, and resistance, there is a lot of useful day-to-day information. There is a section on electric motors, a section on home electrical wiring, a section on electrical safety, and lots more. There is a chapter on sensors that is more up to date with the recent advances in less expensive modules that can be used by microcontrollers like the Arduino. Again, no exhaustive detail, but the information is present to spur the reader on to find more detailed information on the internet and in other references.

Thankfully, this book is NOT written like a traditional textbook with lots of theories and derivations of equations. It presents what you need to work with electricity and with electronic components. It's a tutor...it gives you the basics so that you then know how to find the information when needed. At over 1000 pages, there's a high probability that any topic the reader wants to know about is at least mentioned along with the means to find further information.

Paul Scherz started with a classic book with the first edition. With Simon Monk's addition to the team for the Third and Fourth Editions, this book is destined to be the new standard for electronics instruction.

A Great Book Deserving of Better Quality Paper

This Book gets 5 stars due to it's content, and all of the dedicated effort of the authors. However, this 4th edition suffers from paper quality issues, and unfortunately there is a fair amount of show through on the pages which is distracting while reading.

This is great book, with a lot of extra info worked into the 4th edition. And to the publishers credit the price has been kept low. But I have to wonder if this good price was at the expense of the publisher choosing a lower quality paper to stay within a price point.

I would have been happier to pay a higher price for better quality paper in this book. And I feel the Content, and the Authors deserve it.

Overall I'm sad that the publisher took the path that they took when putting this title into print.

Gouache a la Moscow...

This small book (50-odd pages) purports to introduce you to gouache painting. It's not clear from the book as to the qualities of gouache as opposed to other painting media. The fact that it has been translated poorly from the original Russian into fractured English doesn't help. The painting terms used are not familiar - it refers to 'sheets of paperboard' meaning all purpose watercolor paper (paperboard apparently is what you make cardboard out of) and the 'tablet' as the board onto which you tape your paper. This is very unsettling to the reader. Then there are the obvious comments, like "The area of your tablet should be larger then (sic) the area of sheet". Well, yes... The application of paint is referred to as 'staining' - never did get used to that one. The illustrations were good but often a more detailed explanation was needed to clarify the point the author was trying to make. The book as a whole could be taken as a general guide on how to paint with water media, not with any specific reference to gouache. I was considering gouache as a possible medium for plein air use, as I thought it might be easier to deal with than oils, but this litte book did little to enlighten me as to its qualities. Very disappointing.

The pictures and demonstrations were good, but the English was poor! I'm sorry I ordered it! I am a teacher myself, and don't often find a book that I don't like. This is one of them. The second volume was just as bad!

Nice Presentation of a Seminal Mie's Highrise

A nice black & white photo collection of Mie's first executed, steel frame highrises. Many photos show the towers in the context of the surrounding cityscape over a timespan of many decades. This illustrates the progression from their initial architectural contrast with the buildings of an earlier era to their later surrounding by the very megastructures they foreshadowed. Other, tighter views allow study of the proportions and detailing so important in the work of Mies. We're taken inside an apartment (apparently between tenants with a few pieces of Mie's designed furniture temporarally installed as props) to get a feel of the spaces and views afforded by floor to ceiling, wall to wall windows. A floor plan shows us the open plan apartment layout proposed by the architect, but rejected by the developer as being too radical. Unfortunately, a plan of the built scheme is not provided for comparison. A site/lobby plan, horizontal and vertical wall sections, a couple of perspective drawing/collages and photo of a smiling Mies round out the visual presentation. All photos are presented one to a page/full page size or one image covering two full pages: an excellent method of presentation.

The relatively brief text describes the why and how of the design. Also, a discussion of the pluses and minuses of living in these ground breaking apartments is offered by a long time resident.

Though much information is provided in this book, I feel there is more that could have been revealed about its history and construction. While the definitive book on 860/880 is yet to be written, this volume is a worthwhile addition to anyone's Miesian library.

Great for Self Study

I used this book to study for my boards exam for CT certification. Doing everything self-guided (as opposed to going to school) was very stressful, but this book is simply written yet very thorough. When it came time for the boards exam I was super stressed; as the test date approached I was using this text to really cram. I did have a little help from a sample bottle of NueroNRG – Mental Focus and Energy Supplement - I included the link for anyone who might need a little help staying focused and clear-headed. I was cool as a cucumber when I sat for my exam, and passed by a very comfortable margin. This text was a great resource and I highly recommend it to anyone working towards a CT certification.

study guide for CT registry

I began cross training to CT just over a year ago....I took my test on July 30th and passed with a higher score than I thought I would. I utilized this book, the DeMaio book and the pocket atlas books for cross sectional anatomy. I highly recommend these books to prepare for the exam, it's all you need.

decent ct book with small flaws

This is a good solid text for new CT techs and veteran techs to use as a quick review. Plenty of pictures that help with understanding the text although they're all in black and white which is a negative thing to me. The chapters are well organized and informative. The biggest negative aspect of this book is that there is no chapter that reviews artifacts and their methods of correction which is a big part of the CT registry. Still a solid text that could use improvement but definitely not a waste of money.

I love this book, but the information is hard to use

This is one of the best books I've seen that address building architectural design considerations that affect heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting. It presents tidbits from real designs, focuses on maximizing the effects of the local climate on the building toward the objective of a comfortable and usable living/working space, and addresses supplemental systems as well. This information presumes a level of knowledge relating to some of these concepts that I don't currently have, making it a pretty hard read in many places. However, the book digs pretty deep into each area, providing enough information to get a good start on a building design. The fusion of engineering and creativity is my favorite feature of this book. It provides insight into creative building designs while also presenting the more quantitative factors necessary to size and evaluate a design for intended use.

Still trying to adapt to the new interface of this book , the diagrams that denote the design strategies are very very small, .
i cannot make a good evaluation at the moment as i am still trying to understand the book.
How ever at first glance it seems to give a lot of insight on sustainable strategies . the book build feels very delicate but the steel ring allows for complete 180 deg page flipping.

Finally, a 'real world' book about the profession of sales!

As a consultant to CEO's and company presidents I'm constantly asked by clients for books on the profession of sales that 1) deal with 'real world' selling situations and challenges that they encounter on a daily basis and 2) offer practical, realistic, effective and actionable solutions for making more sales. Dave Kurlan's "Baseline Selling" is the book I will recommend every time. The selling strategies that Kurlan presents in the book are strategies that are easy to understand and employ no matter what the industry or product or service. The section on the 'Psychology of Sales' should be read by every company president or business owner who wants to understand their sales force better or who is looking to upgrade it. The comparisons of the sales world to the game of baseball may be a little strained at times but they make the book more readable and entertaining.

Those who have read "Hope is Not a Strategy" by Rick Page and wished he had put more 'meat on the bone' when it came to practical strategies that can be used immediately with prospects will find those strategies in "Baseline Selling". Kurlan gives many examples of his selling strategies in action.

Great introduction to peer-to-peer lending

I was very pleased with this book. I was looking for straightforward information on peer-to-peer lending, without having to endure a 150-page sales pitch. I came away with a much better understanding of the fundamentals of this type of lending, and I really appreciated the author relating the material back to his experiences. Definitely worth checking out.

A Quick Start to Lending Club Loans

This book takes the mystery out making loans through Lending Club. It gave me the confidence to start loaning money and not make major mistakes. As I increased my loans I frequently referred back to the book as I sought to optimize returns and minimize defaults. I recommend Peer-to-Peer lending but start slow and follow the books' recommendations.

About the Author

Barbara A. Wilson, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist who has worked in brain injury rehabilitation since the 1970s, is founder of The Oliver Zangwill Centre for Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, in Ely, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. She has published 23 books, 280 journal articles and book chapters, and 8 neuropsychological tests, and is editor of the journal Neuropsychological Rehabilitation. She has won many awards for her work, including an OBE for services to rehabilitation, three lifetime achievement awards, the Ramón y Cajal Award from the International Neuropsychiatric Association, and the M. B. Shapiro Award from the British Psychological Society. She is past president of the British Neuropsychological Society and the International Neuropsychological Society, and is currently president of the Encephalitis Society and on the management committee of the World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation. Dr. Wilson is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Academy of Social Sciences. She is an honorary professor at the University of Hong Kong, the University of Sydney, and the University of East Anglia.

They say the memory is the first thing to go, but can it be taken back? "Memory Rehabilitation: Integrating Theory and Practice" is a scholarly psychological text discussing memory and how to rehabilitate it when faced with disorders such as amnesia, memory loss attributed to age and other disorders such as Alzheimers. The therapies listed include everything from simple aids to ways to train one's mind. "Memory Rehabilitation" is a informed and highly scholarly text that does well in every community or college library collection that focuses on psychology and its disorders.
